Strange New Worlds season 3

I alternated between hating and loving this episode from scene to scene. Sometimes from line to line.

As already covered, the idea that people magically become logical (and rude) by having Vulcan dna completely misunderstands the concept of the species, and undermines Spock’s struggle. Which is especially confusing since so many lines in the episode do actually acknowledge all these things. It’s a very muddled story.

Meanwhile, I thought the Spock/La’an fight/dance scene was absolutely beautiful. Nice to casually see cetacean ops as well.

I wish Chapel had actually explained how her experience of being Vulcan helped her understand Spock more. Of course we can make our own assumptions, but to me it was a real missed opportunity for us to understand him more, and have this episode actually contribute something to the canon rather than trampling all over it. Presumably all of the characters would’ve had new insight into why he is the way he is, but we’ll never know...

There shouldn't be whales in cetacean ops. Aren't they still extinct at this time? STIV hasn't happened yet.

That was humpback whales. Not whales overall.

These were belugas, but that’s a good point. I guess it was just larges species like humpbacks, blue and sperm whales that were extinct.

T'Lyn in Lower Decks is a great Vulcan character. Gabrielle Ruiz does an amazing job of never showing any emotion at all when she speaks AND YET T'Lyn never comes across as rude or a jerk. She forms friendships with the main characters and it's completely believable that they'd like her and that she would get something out of the relationships too. And it's a comedy cartoon! I have my doubts that SNW could handle a character like that, which makes me sad since I enjoyed the first two seasons a lot and there's still a lot I like about the show.

Maybe they based all the Vulcans on the jerk Vulcans from DS9 baseball episode.

They were kind of rude in Enterprise as well, I think, and I didn’t like that characterisation either. But at least in that case they usually had good reason to be annoyed with Archer and co’s way of doing things.

I’m still enjoying SNW on the whole, but it feels very much a product of its time. Gimmicks, memberberries and attempts to create meme content. I don’t think it’ll age as well as the likes of TNG, etc.

... I don’t think it’ll age as well as the likes of TNG...
Ouch. TNG has aged terribly. I mean, there are bad TOS episodes, but every fucking TNG episode... TOS cold open: The Enterprise has been sent to investigate why they've lost contact with a starbase. When they get there, they find out EVERYONE IS DEAD. TNG cold open: Data is having a birthday party for his cat.

So, if the writers were really on their game, Geordi could show up to the party late, and find EVERYONE IS DEAD.

I watched those old scientists again, still great.

Why am I picturing...

Geordi: Where is everybody, Data?
Data: They're dead, Geordi.
Geordi: Who is?
Data: Everybody, Geordi.
Geordi: What, Captain Picard?
Data: Everybody's dead, Geordi.
Geordi: Commander Riker?
Data: Everybody's dead, Geordi.
Geordi: What, Doctor Crusher?
Data: They're all dead. Everybody's dead, Geordi.
Geordi: Counselor Troi isn't, is she?
Data: Everybody is dead, Geordi.
Geordi: Not Worf?
Data: Yes, Worf, everybody, everybody's dead, Geordi.
Geordi: Wesley?
Data: He's dead, Geordi, everybody is dead, everybody is dead, Geordi.
Geordi: Wait. Are you trying to tell me everybody's dead?
Data: I feel an emotional response coming on...

I didn't mind this episode too much either. It was a bit stupidly over the top and Pike (bless Anson Mount's soul) makes for a terrible Vulcan.

On the other note here about TNG, you would probably expect an android with WAY too many flashing LEDs in his head to be a little repetitive in his performance. I was watching some obscure s7 TNG episode the other day and I just started making a drinking game out of it, I think that robot said "It is theoretically possible" followed by a random stream of technobabble at least six times in... whatever it was.

So it's enemy mine again, despite them already having done this on TNG, plus a little bit of arena.

It's more than that... it's "Arena" mixed with "The Galileo Seven." In fact, it's a straight rip off of TGS.

And it was pretty good.

Melissa Navia showed us her chops in this one, and she didn't drop the ball. Ortegas handled the sciency stuff well... figured out what was happening and that her time was running out.

I suspected the Metrons were involved well into the episode, and their representation was well done.

Cool shout out to Matt Decker on the Constellation. I wish colonists everywhere would stop fucking getting deadly diseases and needing vaccines, so that our heroes could continue having cool adventures. That whole "we need to rendezvous with another ship to transfer some vitally needed vaccines, supplies, whatever or 8 kajillion colonists go tits up" thing has been done to death.

9/10

I did think the shoot first bit at the end didn't feel very Starfleet.

Questions should definitely be asked later.

I understand that, but we've seen hair trigger reactions from Starfleet personnel when sighting an aggressive species. The red shirt in "Friday's Child" comes to mind.

Nah man... I'd have a shoot on sight policy with Gorn too, especially if I were La'an. But then, if I were La'an, I'd rarely leave my quarters, so maybe I'm not the ultimate moral compass.

Ortegas' reaction to the shooting is completely understandable; she's the first to reach an accord with a Gorn who could have killed her at any time. It reminds me of Pierce Brosnan's Robinson Crusoe when he's locked in a life or death struggle at the end of the movie and is rescued by "civilized people."

3.9 - Good episode. Yes it was similar to some classic episodes, but it still felt like a story on its own right and had weight. I like when they use the universal translator in different ways! It did seem maybe there should have been a scene with La'an and Eric at the end rather than with Uhura, but maybe that will come next week.

The Metron wasn't really needed - the story worked fine with them both just happened to land on the planet - but it was done quite well and I'm in favour of more sci-fi weirdness and less dumb "haha, Star Trek is stupid" comedy so I'm generally in favour of it.

For a moment, I got the impression he was going to wipe everyone's memories of the Gorn back to reset, and that would explain how they became a "new" encounter in TOS.
