10-year-old gives birth in southern Spain

MADRID – A 10-year-old girl has given birth in southern Spain and authorities are evaluating whether to let her and her family retain custody of the baby, an official said Tuesday. The baby was born last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, said Micaela Navarro, the Andalusia region's social affairs minister.

Navarro told reporters the father of the baby is also a minor, and both the mother and the baby were in good health. Her department declined to give details, including the sex of the baby, but said authorities do not consider this a case of rape and that no criminal investigation is under way.

Under Spanish law, having consensual sex with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse, an official with the Spanish Justice Ministry in Madrid said. But this particular case is complicated by the fact that the father of the baby is also a minor and it is not clear if he could be charged, the official said.

Spanish newspapers said the mother is of Romanian origin.

The daily Diario de Jerez reported the girl was already pregnant when she arrived in Spain, but did not say when she came to this country. It is not clear if the father is in Spain.

Medical experts warn that because young girls are still growing, they are at higher risk during pregnancy. Studies have shown that teenage girls are more likely to give birth to premature babies and their infants have a higher chance of dying by age one.

I read about that (the pregnant 5-year-old) in a textbook. I also read that the oldest recorded pregnancy was with a 69-year-old Russian peasant woman.

I think it's happening because we've so screwed (no pun intended) with the natural timing of biology that these poor kid systems are coming online earlier and earlier in order to ensure they have the opportunity to be biologically successful.

Unfortunately, garishly strong early sexuality is one of the side effects of having to compete with your mother for semen resources.

We've seen the mothers of these children right? To describe these womens sexuality as garishly strong would be an understatement. Clownlike would be more accurate.

We were evolved to eat a LOT less calories, and a lot less fat. If your body gets all of that "good" stuff, it says "Hey, Plentiful time, MAKE MORE PEOPLE before the Saber-Tooth Tigers and T-Rex's eat 'em (because let's face it, no fangs, no claws, and we are slow)." Hence our nutrition is triggering early puberty in a lot of cases.

However, while kids are sensual and curious creatures, they are not ready for sex even if their bodies start developing that way so early. These kids having kids that early are not ready to be parents either. It's a loosing strategy for reproduction UNTIL the nanny-state started enabling these young mothers. Now sex (and "innocence") is a commodity. The mothers learn, and they teach their daughters, either directly or through example.

This is where parenting comes in. If kids are ignored, they'll start doing things without thinking of consequence. It feels good, they'll do it with all of the forethought of a golden retriever humping the ottoman. If Parents don't PARENT, this is part of the result. I think that Spain terming this as child abuse is perfectly appropriate, it means that the parents aren't doing their job. Let the kid be a KID for heaven's sake, let 'em play and learn and grow...not be a commodity, an object, or have even the peripheral responsibility of parenting at that age.

Maybe we need to start mandating (yeah, Nanny-state) norplant at age 6?
