The 2019-20 season didn’t end according to plan, and now the 2020-21 season won’t begin according to plan, but what does ACC Basketball look like heading into the season?

The 2019-20 ACC Basketball season ended with Syracuse beating North Carolina in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina, as the remainder of the ACC Tournament would later be canceled. Since then the NCAA Tournament was canceled and the 2020-21 season has been pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, the 2020-21 season is going to be one of the most interesting we have seen in quite some time. There is no true reigning ACC tournament Champion, we didn’t get to see how many ACC teams made the NCAA Tournament and how they would do in the NCAA Tournament, and a plethora of other reasons.

In addition to that, the NBA Draft is taking place only a week before the 2020-21 College Basketball season kicks off, which makes for an interesting series of events. Nonetheless, the 2020-21 College Basketball Season is set to tip-off on November 25th as in-season tournaments have moved locations and have added bubbles to ensure that players and coaches wouldn’t contract COVID-19, and we might see arenas with limited fans.

It is for these reasons that the 2020-21 season is going to be so interesting, and so unique. It is also for these reasons that we could see teams that we didn’t expect to be good, surprise many, and thrive. Above all, the 2020-21 ACC Season is going to be really interesting as we see teams like the North Carolina Tar Heels, who had a horrible 2019-20 season, come out with a rebuilt roster, and hopes of being competitive this year.

Johnson, Steward help No. 9 Duke beat Coppin State 81-71
Freshman Jalen Johnson had 19 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks. Fellow rookie DJ Steward scored 24 points for the Blue Devils, including a key 3-pointer with 2:02 left that helped keep Duke in control during an unexpectedly tight finish. DeJuan Clayton and Anthony Tarke each scored 22 points to lead the Eagles, who shot 33% but made 10 3-pointers, seven coming after halftime.

Virginia Tech upsets No. 3 Villanova 81-73 in overtime
Keve Aluma scored 22 points, Nahiem Alleyne had 20 and Tyrece Radford added eight points and 13 rebounds for Tech (2-0),outscoring the Wildcats 17-9 in the extra frame. Collin Gillespie scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half for Villanova (2-1). Caleb Daniels added 17 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl finished with 14 for the Wildcats.

The first Associated Press men's college basketball poll of the regular season remained steady at the top. The rest, predictably, was filled with change as teams exceeded or failed to live up to preseason expectations.

MEN
Watts scores 20, No. 8 Michigan State beats No. 6 Duke 75-69
Rocket Watts scored 20 points, Aaron Henry had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks for the Spartans and Julius Marble had a career-high 12 to help No. 8 The Spartans (3-0) beat No. 6 Blue Devils (1-1) Tuesday night in the Champions Classic. Matthew Hurt had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Duke, but freshman Jalen Johnson was limited to 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Jaemyn Brakefield scored 11 and Jordan Goldwire had 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Black helps No. 14 UNC top Stanford 67-63 in Maui semifinals
Leaky Black had a big driving basket at the 1:02 mark followed by a clinching free throw with 5.5 seconds left. Freshman Caleb Love scored 16 points to lead the Tar Heels (3-0), who won despite 24 turnovers. Daejon Davis scored 18 points to lead Stanford (1-1), which shot 39% and made 5 of 20 3-point tries. Touted freshman Ziaire Williams finished with 10 points.

Huff's 13 lead No. 15 Virginia past St. Francis (Pa), 76-51
Jay Huff scored 13 points as the Cavaliers rebounded from last Friday's stunning defeat. Kadin Shedrick had 12 points and eight rebounds, Sam Hauser added 11 points and Trey Murphy III had 10 for the Cavaliers (2-1). Bryce Laskey led the Red Flash (1-2) with 12 points and Mark Flagg had 11.

South Carolina's win streak halted at 29, NC State women's basketball secures third-ever victory over a No. 1

The top-ranked South Carolina women's basketball team saw its 29-game winning streak end Thursday at home in Columbia, South Carolina, as the Gamecocks were upset 54-46 by No. 8 NC State. It was the first loss for the Gamecocks since Nov. 28, 2019, when they fell to Indiana 71-57 in the Virgin Islands. South Carolina didn't lose again last season and ended it ranked No. 1; the Gamecocks would have been a No. 1 seed had there been an NCAA tournament. The Gamecocks started this season at No. 1 and got off to a 3-0 start. But offensively, they struggled against NC State, shooting just 27% from the field (20 of 74). This was a game in which the Gamecocks definitely seemed to miss point guard Tyasha Harris, who finished her career last season and moved on to the WNBA. Entering the game, NC State was 2-17 vs No. 1-ranked teams in the Associated Press poll era, which for the women began in the 1976-77 season.
