NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS

Virginia Tech holds off Howell, No. 10 North Carolina 17-10
#!0 North Carolina: 0 - 1 Overall, 0 - 1 ACC

Virginia Tech didn't appear to get much consideration when the experts tabbed No. 10 North Carolina and No. 14 Miami as the teams to beat in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. They will now. Braxton Burmeister ran for a touchdown and threw for another and Virginia Tech made Sam Howell look pedestrian in a 17-10 victory over North Carolina on Friday night in the opener for both teams. The Tar Heels, who arrived with their highest preseason ranking since 1997, had the ball for just 9:11 in the first half and only avoided being down by more because Keshaun King fumbled the ball away at the Tar Heels 9.

Howell figures in 5 TDs, No. 24 Tar Heels rout Georgia State
North Carolina: 1 - 1

Sam Howell's reputation has largely been built on what he does throwing the football for No. 24 North Carolina. His footwork carrying the ball drew most of the attention Saturday night. Howell scored on two rushes to go with three touchdown throws as the Tar Heels beat Georgia State 59-17, shaking off the disappointment of an opening-game defeat. Howell was the game's leading rusher with 104 yards on 11 carries. His 22-yard scramble produced the game's first points. Howell became the second North Carolina player to collect 300 or more passing yards and 100-plus rushing yards in the same game. The other was Marquise Williams in a 2014 loss at Notre Dame.Georgia State (0-2) was held to 90 passing yards. Quarterback Cornelious Brown IV was12 for 26 for 68 yards.

Howell, Chandler, Downs help No. 21 UNC beat Virginia 59-39

Up and down the field they went Sam Howell and North Carolina's offense ending drive after drive in the end zone whether through the air on the ground. The 21st-ranked Tar Heels have found some of the offensive rhythm missing in a season-opening loss. Howell threw five touchdown passes and ran for a career-best 112 yards as North Carolina took over after halftime to beat Virginia 59-39 on Saturday night. The Tar Heels (2-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored touchdowns on all five of their second-half drives, which helped turn a 28-24 halftime deficit into a 52-31 lead on Howell's short TD throw to Kaman Morales with 12:13 left. And after a first-half shootout with Brennan Armstrong and the Cavaliers (2-1, 0-1), North Carolina gave up only a field goal in the third quarter while also coming up with Ja'Qurious Conley's interception. It was UNC's biggest scoring output against Virginia since 1936 in the long-running series and second-most ever.

Sims sparks Ga. Tech to 45-22 upset of No. 21 North Carolina

Sims came off the bench to run for three touchdowns and pass for another, Georgia Tech's defense stifled Sam Howell much of the game and the Yellow Jackets beat a ranked team for the first time in Geoff Collins' three seasons as coach with a 45-22 upset of No. 21 North Carolina. Sims played for the first time since he was injured in a season-opening loss to Northern Illinois and surrendered his starting job to Jordan Yates. He rushed for 128 yards on 10 carries and completed 10 of 13 passes for 112 yards. North Carolina (2-2, 1-2) is shaping up as one of the nation’s most underachieving teams after coming into the season ranked in the top 10. Sam Howell was sacked eight times and fumbled the ball away three times, leading to 10 points for the the Yellow Jackets in the first half and setting up their final TD. He also was stuffed on a fourth-down run in his own territory, giving Georgia Tech another short field that led to a touchdown.

Howell shines as UNC tops rival Duke, 38-7

Sam Howell threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns and North Carolina topped Duke 38-7 on Saturday, keeping hold of the coveted Victory Bell for a third straight year. The Tar Heels (3-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped ahead with a pair of explosive plays in the first half. UNC hasn’t held a team to seven points or less since its 2020 season opener, a 31-6 victory over Syracuse. This season, the Tar Heels had been allowing 29.5 points per-game before its meeting with Duke. After the game, Brown had nothing but praise for the defensive unit. Since Brown returned to coach the Tar Heels before the 2019 season, UNC has only lost four times at home.
