2018 Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament

Five teams that could win the NCAA women's basketball tournament
and 10 players who could ignite a title run

A popular refrain this March is that the 2021 NCAA women's basketball tournament is up for grabs, some saying as many as 10 teams are in the mix to win the championship. Part of the reason is the large amount of talent and several standout seniors and three strong draft-eligible juniors lost to the WNBA in 2020. Plus there's the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which limited nonconference matchups, and the fact that every team will be on neutral courts, with the entire tournament to be played in the San Antonio area. But now that we've seen the bracket and gone over the matchups, which teams appear to have the best chance to raise the trophy in the Alamodome on April 4? Here's a look at five championship contenders and why they stand out, plus 10 players who might help ignite a title run.

Chalk ruled the opening day of the 2021women's basketball tournament as higher seeds went 16-0. Day 2 was for the underdogs. Three double-digit seeds pulled big upsets to reach the second round, which made for plenty of change as we reseed the field.

Indiana and Arizona are making their own history in the women's NCAA tournament

When Adia Barnes became the head coach for Arizona women's basketball in 2016, everyone she knew seemed to think it was a mistake, even though it was her alma mater. Yet Barnes' No. 3 seed Wildcats are going to the NCAA women's Elite Eight, and on Monday they'll face another team that is in a regional final for the first time in program history. Indiana (2018) and Arizona (2019) took steps toward that by winning WNIT titles the last two years. Those championships gave both programs some needed postseason success to learn from.

Reseeding the women's basketball tournament 2021 field for the Elite Eight
Everyone said it was a wide-open NCAA women's basketball tournament. The 2021 women's Elite Eight is set, and while the race to the national championship seemed like an eight-team affair throughout the regular season, few expected the regional finals would look like this group of eight.

Women's Final Four 2021: Three No. 1 seeds advance, but Stanford, UConn remain favorites

The women's Final Four field, which includes three No. 1 seeds, runs the gamut of experience. The UConn Huskies are looking for their 12th NCAA championship, while their semifinal opponent, the Arizona Wildcats , are in the Final Four for the first time. On the other side of the bracket, coach Dawn Staley guided the South Carolina Gamecocks to the Final Four for the third time in the past six tournaments, and the Gamecocks' defense was suffocating in its Elite Eight victory. South Carolina will take on the Stanford Cardinals, who are making their 14th Final Four appearance and give the Pac-12 two teams in the national semifinals. The No. 1 overall seed, Stanford battled back to beat Louisville after facing its largest deficit of the season Tuesday. The Cardinal are deep, and their many scoring options are a big part of how they have gotten this far. Here's a look at Friday's matchups in the Alamodome -- South Carolina and Stanford tip at 6 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN App), followed by Arizona-UConn at 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN App) -- and what we think of the updated ESPN Basketball Power Index, which says UConn is the favorite.
