Pitcher Carlos Rodon, DHs J.D. Martinez, Garrett Cooper named All-Star Game replacements by MLB

Rodon was one of the more notable snubs when rosters were announced, but he ends up making his second All-Star appearance by replacing Milwaukee Brewers closer Josh Hader, who has family responsibilities. Martinez replaces Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez and becomes the third Boston Red Sox player to land on the American League roster along with Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers. Cooper steps in for reigning National League MVP Bryce Harper. The Philadelphia Phillies' star has a fractured thumb.

MLB All-Star Game to be decided by home run derby if tied after 9 innings

With the Home Run Derby always popular the night before the game, Major League Baseball decided to make a slugging showcase part of the Midsummer Classic. And no doubt, a lot of fans will now be rooting for a tie, just to see another launch of long balls. Players, too. In the tiebreaker, "each player can take an unlimited number of pitches without it counting against their swing total. Players on each team may hit in any order during the All-Star tiebreaker; provided, however, the batters from each team shall alternate."

Washington Nationals' Juan Soto edges Seattle Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez to win 2022 Home Run Derby

Juan Soto won $1 million on Monday with a swing that is worth plenty more. Shaking off trade rumors that threatened to sully his All-Star week, Soto beat a legend and held off a rookie to win the Home Run Derby and the big-money prize that accompanied it in front of a sold-out Dodger Stadium crowd. At 23 years, 266 days old, Soto became the second-youngest Derby champion, just a day older than 1993 winner Juan Gonzalez. Rodriguez, who is earning the MLB minimum salary of $700,000 this year, received a $500,000 bonus as the runner-up.

Giancarlo Stanton wins MVP, powers American League to 9th straight All-Star Game win

The first All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium in 42 years featured Clayton Kershaw starting in front of the home fans and appearances from Albert Pumols and Miguel Cabrera, but the final score looked all too familiar: The American League won 3-2 for its ninth straight All-Star victory and 21st in the past 25 Midsummer Classics. The game turned in the fourth inning when Giancarlo Stanton and Byron Buxton delivered back-to-back home runs off the Los Angeles Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin. Neither was cheated with his swing. Stanton's game-tying two-run shot was a 457-foot blast to left-center -- longer than any home run hit at Dodger Stadium in the first half of the season. Buxton followed with a 425-foot shot down the left-field line, the seventh time in All-Star history with back-to-back home runs.

Stanton, making his first All-Star appearance for the New York Yankees since they acquired him from the Miami Marlins before the 2018 season, won MVP honors with his first All-Star hit; he had gone 0-for-6 in his previous games. He is now one of five players to win a league MVP Award, a Home Run Derby and an All-Star Game MVP, joining Ken Griffey Jr., Miguel Tejada, Cal Ripken Jr. and Dave Parker. Stanton also is the third Yankees player to win All-Star MVP, along with Derek Jeter (2000) and Mariano Rivera (2013).
