2023 Heisman Tracker
Points awarded: 5 for first-place votes, 4 for second, 3 for third, 2 for fourth and 1 for fifth. Odds by Caesars Sportsbook (through Sept. 27). Looking at this list it would appear the Heisman Trophy will run through the West.

Top-5
No.1: QB Michael Penix Jr., Washington
He's not really running the ball at all, but he also hasn't had to, throwing for 1,636 yards with 15 TD passes, already well ahead of last season's marks of 4,641 and 31.

No.2: QB Calab Williams, USC
Williams has yet to throw fewer than three TD passes in a game, has yet to throw an INT and his two sub-300-yard performances came against San Jose State and Stanford.

No.3: QB Bo Nix, Oregon
Nix is now the only player in college football history to account for 55 TDs at two different schools, but he has openly admitted feeling freedom in Eugene that he never did at Auburn.

No.4: QB Jordan Travis, Florida State
Travis threw for "only" 289 yards and two TDs, but that second scoring pass was a thing of eephus ball beauty and also happened to win the game in overtime. Oh, and he also ran for a score.

No.5: QB Cam Ward, Washington State
In the conference we've lovingly started referring to as the 2Pac, Cam Ward has folks on the Palouse thinking about their QB glory days of Drew Bledsoe, Ryan Leaf and Gardner Minshew.

2023 HEISMAN TRACKER

After years of moaning over meh Heisman Trophy races, some began to question the relevance of an 88-year-old award "to the most outstanding player in college football" in this ever-changing world of NIL, the transfer portal and an impatient rush toward becoming NFL 2.0. From defending Heisman winner Caleb Williams and a sudden gaggle of would-be Pac-12 successors to SEC and Big Ten superstars, most of whom kept their teams in the CFP scrum all season long, who among them do our ESPN panelists believe will be having their photo taken onstage in Manhattan? We asked. They answered. Just as we've done every month of this season. Now you can see our final result while we wait for the final final result on Saturday night (8 p.m. ET, ESPN).

LSU QB Jayden Daniels tops field to win Heisman Trophy

For the second year in a row and the fifth time in the past seven years, a transfer quarterback has won the Heisman Trophy. LSU's Jayden Daniel, who began his college career at Arizona State before transferring to Baton Rouge in 2022, won the sport's most prestigious individual award Saturday night after accounting for 4,946 yards of offense (3,812 passing yards, 1,134 rushing yards) and 50 total touchdowns this season. Daniels received 503 first-place votes and 2,029 total points to beat out two fellow transfer quarterbacks in Washington's Michael Penix Jr. (292 first place, 1,701 total) and Oregon's Bo Nix (51 first place, 885 total), as well as Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (20 first place, 352 total) in a ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City. Florida State's Jordan Travis placed fifth after receiving eight first-place votes for 85 total points.

Daniels led all FBS players in QBR (95.7), yards per attempt (11.7, an FBS record) and passing touchdowns (40), as well as completions of 20 yards or more (70). His 72.2 completion percentage was seventh in the nation, while his total offensive yards per game (412.2) were first, 74 yards better than the next best player. As a runner, Daniels was topped by only 25 running backs in yards per game, and his 8.4 rushing yards per attempt was good enough for fourth in FBS among all running backs. In every season since he entered college, Daniels has improved upon his output as a runner, more than tripling his 2019 rushing yards total in 2023.

Lamar Jackson authors 'MVP performance' for Baltimore Ravens

When quarterback Lamar Jackson walked onto the field for pregame warmups, he heard the chants of "MVP" coming from Baltimore Ravens fans at Levi's Stadium. After the Ravens' 33-19 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, it was Jackson's coaches and teammates declaring him "hands down" the best player in football. In a battle of the teams with the best records in the league, Jackson took control of the MVP race by resoundingly out-dueling 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Weaving around the 49ers pass-rushers all game, Jackson threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns while leading Baltimore in rushing with 45 yards. Purdy, meanwhile, threw a career-worst four interceptions.

Entering Monday night, Purdy was the betting favorite for NFL MVP and Jackson was second, according to ESPN BET. After the game, Jackson became the frontrunner for MVP (-180) with two weeks remaining in the regular season. With 19 touchdown passes this season, Jackson would become one of the more unlikely NFL MVPs. The fewest touchdown passes by an MVP was 24 by Steve McNair, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The Ravens were 6.5-point underdogs to the 49ers. That's the second-largest underdog role in Jackson's six-year career.
