With Oklahoma and Texas, each of which also added big-time transfers, now part of the conference, the SEC not only has the last two teams to win national championships but is once again the deepest league in the country. The Gamecocks remain No. 1 in our rankings. No team has repeated as national champion since UConn in 2016.

Incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg headlines USA Select team

A year from now, incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg could be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, and he's already adding to his résumé. USA Basketball has invited the 17-year-old to practice against Team USA ahead of the Paris Olympics. Flagg was one of 15 players named to the USA Select Team on Friday, a group that will help the national team prepare at a training camp next week in Las Vegas. There's a long history of players from the Select Team eventually joining the national team down the line, including current players Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton, who served in the role in 2021 before the Tokyo Olympics. Flagg, a 6-foot-9 forward from Newport, Maine, is the first collegian to play for the Select Team since 2013, when then-college stars Doug McDermott of Creighton and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State were on the squad. The team will be coached by Magic coach Jamahl Mosley.

Clemson motion to nix ACC countersuit in N.C. court denied

The stalemate between the ACC and the two schools challenging its grant of rights continued Wednesday when a North Carolina judge denied Clemson's motion to dismiss the ACC countersuit, meaning the two sides will proceed to trial in two separate jurisdictions. Judge Louis Bledsoe, who is also overseeing the ACC's suit against Florida State, ruled that the ACC did have jurisdiction to file its suit in a Mecklenburg County court. Clemson had aimed to have the suit stayed or dismissed based on a sovereign immunity claim.

"The only court that has jurisdiction over FSU, Clemson, and the ACC -- and thus the only court that can assure a consistent, uniform interpretation of the Grant of Rights Agreements and the ACC's Constitution and Bylaws, the determinations at the core of the Pending Actions -- is a North Carolina court," Bledsoe wrote in his decision. "As the court found, Clemson does not challenge whether the ACC Grant of Rights is valid or enforceable. This recognizes the ACC's consistent position that the 2013 and 2016 Grant of Rights are valid and enforceable agreements that each of our members entered into voluntarily, with full knowledge of their terms."

Pittsburgh Panthers, Jeff Capel reach contract extension

Men's basketball coach Jeff Capel and Pittsburgh have agreed to a three-year contract extension, the school announced Wednesday. The deal keeps Capel with the Panthers through at least the 2029-30 season. Capel is 97-92 in six seasons at Pitt, which hired him in 2018 after he served as an assistant at Duke. Capel was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2023, after guiding the Panthers to a third-place showing despite being picked to finish 14th in the preseason. The Panthers went 22-11 this past season, narrowly missing an NCAA tournament berth.

Clemson signs Brad Brownell to new contract after Elite Eight run

Clemson men's basketball coach Brad Brownell received a new five-year contract worth $20 million after leading the Tigers to the Elite Eight this past season. A panel of the Clemson board of trustees approved Brownell's enhanced contract, along with new deals for men's soccer coach Mike Noonan and baseball coach Erik Bakich on Thursday. Brownell, who'll enter his 15th season this fall, is the program leader with 265 victories. His latest deal would tie him to the school through the 2028-29 season. Brownell has made four NCAA tournaments during his tenure, with this past spring being his most successful run. The sixth-seeded Tigers defeated 11th-seeded New Mexico in the NCAA opener before ousting third-seeded Baylor and second-seeded Arizona to advance to the Elite Eight. It ended a step shy of the Final Four with an 89-82 loss to Alabama.

ACC boss to fight Clemson, FSU lawsuits 'for as long as it takes'

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said Monday that the league would fight lawsuits with Clemson and Florida State "for as long as it takes," adding "this conference is bigger than any one school or schools" as the league prepares to enter football season embroiled in courtrooms with two of its premier programs. Raycom had a long partnership with the ACC but was struggling financially, and it needed to keep a package of ACC media rights for survival, according to the complaint. John Swofford's son, Chad Swofford, worked for Raycom at the time and eventually became a vice president and general manager at the company.

Troy Taylor: Stanford will adapt to ACC or risk irrelevancy

As Stanford enters the ACC, football coach Troy Taylor has taken a big-picture view to switching conferences and a shifting collegiate landscape. "We'll adapt or you're not going to be relevant," Taylor said Tuesday, as Cal and Stanford made their first ACC media day appearances. Both schools scrambled to find a new conference home after the Pac-12 broke up last summer. Indeed, Taylor recounted how shocking it was to see such a storied conference break apart and how nerve-wracking it was to consider life outside a power conference. The ACC provided a landing spot for both schools, and while it is not a geographical fit, Taylor said there was a lesson learned as realignment impacted conferences across the country.

Florida State, ACC complete court-ordered mediation

Florida State and the Atlantic Coast Conference completed mediation mandated by a Florida judge, according to a court filing posted Thursday, as the legal battle between the school and the league it has been a member of for 32 years appears poised to drag into the football season and beyond. According to the filing, representatives of the school and conferences mediated in person on Aug. 13. "Although the parties did not resolve this matter, the parties continue discussions," the two-sentence joint notice of mediation compliance stated.

Florida State and Clemson are both searching for an affordable way out of the ACC, challenging what they consider to be exorbitant exit fees and a contract that binds member schools to each other and the conference through media rights. Florida State says leaving the ACC now could cost more than half a billion dollars. The ACC has countersued both schools, saying neither has the right to sue and are breaching their contractual agreements by doing so.

The ACC's media rights contract with ESPN runs through 2036, though the network has an option to end the deal in 2027. ACC members also signed a grant of rights that runs concurrent with the ESPN deal and hands over the broadcast rights to the school's home football games through the length of the agreement. Florida State and Clemson say the value of the deal leaves them at a disadvantage when compared to schools in the SEC and Big Ten.

Duke's Cooper Flagg signs New Balance shoe endorsement deal

Duke forward Cooper Flagg -- the No. 1 prospect in ESPN's 2025 NBA draft class -- has signed a significant shoe endorsement deal with New Balance. Flagg joins a New Balance brand tied closely to his home state, including a Skowhegan, Maine, manufacturing factory that is 25 miles from his childhood home in Newport. Flagg, 17, reclassified to enter college a year early and looms as an immensely anticipated NBA prospect. At 6-foot-9, Flagg is a remarkable two-way player with explosive athleticism, all-around skills and a propensity to play at an elevated rate of intensity. He was the lone college player and teenager invited to Team USA's pre-Olympic training camp in Las Vegas and made a strong impression as part of the select team scrimmaging against the United States' gold-medal-winning roster. Flagg was the Gatorade National Player of the Year at Montverde Academy in Florida with a senior season that included 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 3.7 steals and 3.7 blocks per game.
