UNC Basketball: The 2024-25 ACC schedule has been announced

The ACC announced the men’s and women’s basketball schedule for the 2024-25 season yesterday afternoon. This year’s announcement is a little more interesting than previous years because it is the first time that Cal, Stanford, and SMU will be thrown into the mix. There’s been a lot of talk about what this will look like for schools and how often Atlantic coast teams would have to travel out west, but now we finally have some answers. Turns out things aren’t all that bad for the UNC men’s team. The women’s? Well…we’ll get to that.

Here is who the men’s team will face in 2024-25: Home: Boston College, Cal, Georgia Tech, Miami, SMU, Stanford, Virginia. Away: Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest. Home and Home: Duke, NC State, Pitt. The biggest note when looking at the men’s schedule is that they will not have to travel out west at all next season. The Heels will face off against all three newcomers, but they will do so from the comfort of the Dean Dome.

Speaking of worse, here’s a look at the women’s basketball schedule: Home: Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Boston College. Away: Duke, Cal, Stanford, SMU, Pitt, Miami, Clemson, Louisville, Syracuse. A shocking development in the UNC women’s schedule is that they will not face NC State twice next season. This also appears to be the case the following season, so at least for now it appears that the UNC/NC State rivalry series has died and we will now see the teams only play each other once in the regular season.

The SEC now has seven teams in the top 25. With Oklahoma and Texas, each of which also added big-time transfers, now part of the conference, the SEC not only has the last two teams to win national championships but is once again the deepest league in the country. The Gamecocks remain No. 1 in our rankings. No team has repeated as national champion since UConn in 2016.

After three months of constant changes to the college basketball landscape -- due to seismic coaching changes, the transfer portal, the NBA draft -- July was a quieter period for roster machinations. There were a couple of noteworthy additions, but the final real needle mover from the portal was Auther Kaluma going to Texas.

G League assistant coach Joe Wolf, ex-UNC captain, dies at 59

Joe Wolf, a former captain for Dean Smith at North Carolina who went on to play for seven teams in an 11-year NBA career before becoming a coach, died unexpectedly Thursday, the Miiwaukee Bucks announced. Wolf, an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd -- the Bucks' G League affiliate -- was 59. North Carolina went 115-22 in Wolf's four seasons, making the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight twice in that span. Wolf -- a 6-foot-11 center and forward -- quickly moved into coaching once his NBA career was done, using skills he said Dean Smith began instilling in him from the start of his college experience.

Wolf was an All-ACC selection in 1987 and left North Carolina with 1,231 points. The LA Clippers used the No. 13 pick in the 1987 draft on Wolf, who spent his first three NBA seasons there before later playing for Denver, Charlotte, Orlando, Portland, Boston and Milwaukee -- a return to his home state of Wisconsin, where he led Kohler High School to three state championships. He coached at the college level as an assistant at William & Mary and UNC Wilmington, was a head coach in what is now called the G League with Idaho, Colorado and Greensboro, had been an NBA for Milwaukee and Brooklyn and was hired in 2023 as a G League assistant for the Herd
