Marcus Semien replaces Jose Altuve as starter in All-Star Game

Marcus Semien of the host Texas Rangers will replace Houston's Jose Altuve as the American League's starting second baseman for the All-Star Game on Tuesday night. Major League Baseball said Thursday that Altuve will rest his left hand, which has been sore since he was hit by a 94.3 mph slider from Minnesota's Josh Winder on July 5. Semien will start the All-Star Game for the third straight season. He finished second to Altuve in the final round of fan voting for starting berths and originally made this year's AL All-Star team as a reserve by finishing second to Altuve in voting among players, managers and coaches.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler (back) to skip Sunday start

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler will skip his scheduled start Sunday and use the upcoming All-Star break to recover from nagging back issues. Wheeler, a two-time NL All-Star, left his last start, a 10-1 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday, after five innings because of back spasms. After the game, the 34-year-old right-hander said he had been dealing with the back issue for weeks. Wheeler had an MRI on Wednesday that showed no structural damage. He reported still being sore Wednesday, but manager Rob Thomson said Thursday that his pitcher was feeling better. Wheeler is 10-4 with a 2.70 ERA in 19 starts for the major league-leading Phillies.

Pirates rookie ace Paul Skenes named NL's All-Star starter

Rookie sensation Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates will start for the National League at Tuesday's All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas. The right-hander, 22, was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft and has started only 11 games in the major leagues. National League All-Star manager Torey Lovullo of the Arizona Diamondbacks informed Skenes and the public of his decision Friday morning by calling into Skenes' interview on the "Dan Patrick Show."

The 6-foot-6 Skenes made his MLB debut on May 11 and has struck out 89 batters with 13 walks across 66⅓ innings this season. He has the most punchouts with a sub-2.00 ERA through 11 starts since ERA became an official statistic in 1913, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He becomes just the fifth rookie pitcher to start the All-Star Game -- the first in nearly 30 years. He joins Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Mark Fidrych (1976) and Dave Stenhouse (1962). Skenes is also the first Pirates pitcher to start the Midsummer Classic since Jerry Reuss in 1975.
