Mack Brown says UNC can be better despite losing Drake Maye​

North Carolina has not named a starting quarterback to replace first-round pick Drake Maye, but coach Mack Brown says the Tar Heels have a chance to be a better team no matter who wins the competition. Texas A7M transfer Max Johnson and Connor Harrell head into fall camp vying for the starting job. It is the second time in four years the Tar Heels must replace a quarterback who has gone off to the NFL -- Sam Howell in 2022 and Maye to the New England Patriots in April with the No. 3 pick. After starting 6-0 last season, North Carolina lost five of its final seven games and finished 8-5. Brown made a change at defensive coordinator, hiring former Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins to revamp that group. But the focus remains on the quarterbacks.

With Johnson out for year, Brown urges UNC to 'rally around' Harrell​

North Carolina is moving forward with Conner Harrell as its starting quarterback after Max Johnson suffered a season-ending injury in the opening win at Minnesota. Johnson had beaten out Harrell to be the Game 1 starter but suffered a leg injury in the third quarter against the Gophers and had to be carted off and taken to a hospital. He had surgery for a broken right leg in Minneapolis and Brown said Johnson was having another procedure Monday. Brown said Johnson will remain for a week or two in Minnesota, where UNC has left an assistant trainer behind to stay with him until he can return to Chapel Hill. Harrell appeared in five games as a backup to eventual No. 3 overall NFL draft pick Drake Maye last season, then started the Duke's Mayo Bowl loss to West Virginia after Maye declared for the draft. After Johnson's exit, Harrell closed out the win Thursday at Minnesota by completing 2 of 4 passes for 34 yards.

Injured North Carolina QB Max Johnson plans to return in 2025
Johnson won the UNC starting job over Connor Harris out of camp, as he arrived as a transfer this offseason. He has started 23 games in his career and appeared in 31, throwing for 5,923 yards and 47 touchdowns.

UNC's Brown takes blame but says no plans to resign after 70-50 loss​

Mack Brown told ESPN on Saturday that he is not resigning after an emotional locker room scene with his players following North Carolinas embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison, which is in its third season as an FBS school. Brown, a College Football Hall of Famer, said he told the players that it was his fault and that he would step away if he couldn't get things fixed. The 70 points were the most ever given up by the Tar Heels, who fell to 3-1. Brown, 73, is in his sixth season at North Carolina. He told ESPN he was aware of some reports and that messages in emotional locker rooms can be misconstrued but was adamant that he is not stepping down. He has led North Carolina to winning records in four of his five seasons. The Tar Heels won eight games last season and nine the season before when they finished first in the ACC's Coastal Division. Brown was at Texas for 16 seasons and won a national championship in 2005 and played for another in 2009. He resigned under pressure following the 2013 season and, after taking a break from coaching, returned in 2019 to North Carolina for his second stint in Chapel Hill. Brown was North Carolina's coach from 1988 to 1997.

Tylee Craft, beloved UNC receiver, dies at 23 from cancer​

North Carolina wide receiver Tylee Craft died Saturday morning following a lengthy battle with cancer, the school announced. Craft, 23, of Sumter, South Carolina, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer on March 14, 2022. The UNC community had rallied behind him with the #TyleeStrong hashtag since his diagnosis. He had undergone numerous treatments, but the cancer spread through his body and brain. Still, he had enrolled in graduate courses toward his master's degree in applied professional studies and graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science/sports administration. Craft had been struggling with debilitating back pain, so UNC's athletic training staff took him to the hospital in 2022 for more testing to determine the cause of it. That's when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. He immediately began an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Brown, a Florida State grad, earned his first win over his alma mater. He was 0-3 against the Seminoles while at Tulane in the mid-1980s and came into the game with an 0-8 mark in two stints at UNC. Hampton racked up 172 rushing yards and 93 receiving yards and now has 14 touchdowns. The senior is just the fourth UNC player to have five rushing touchdowns in a game and has surpassed the 3,000-yard mark in his career.
