I want this forum for the ADLA. Number_6 has, unfortunately, returned.

I propose a "Debate Off". Winner gets ownership of the forum.

Topic to be chosen by an unbiased party.

Whatever. Stupid ComicCon debate shit from retarded teenies who've always lived in the internet age and have somehow come to think that what happens here actually means anything.

Also, debates online are a waste of time. I can Google anything I want, meaning that anything I post is suspect--it could have come from anywhere. I don't actually have to know anything to debate online--just know where to find obscure sites that tell me what I need to know.

And the idea that I'd want to take the time to learn about any topic under the sun just to "prove" something on a fucking bulletin board is about as lame as it gets. Fine for losers or pimply-faced adolescents without a real life; a waste of time for those of us who have to actually learn things for our jobs, and have little or no time to learn things to impress a 14 year old.

Tell you what. I'll sit tight here with my doctorate and you play internet games. How's that sound?

^^I simply do not care enough to bother. If you want to debate something I already know about--and care about--that's one thing. If you want to pull some topic out of your ass, like the price of tea in Zimbabwe, well, it's not really worth my time to research the topic adequately to be able to debate it.

I have a job, you see, and I'm required to do a great deal of research in order to keep it. That keeps me busy enough. When I debate here, I debate on things I know something about, like the state of education, for example, something I live with every single day. You'll note that there are any number of arguments I stay out of, because I do not have the knowledge I need to argue effectively.

If there were world enough and time, then I'd be happy to learn about anything and everything. But there's not. You'll come to understand this when you get a little older.

I'm just coming to accept the fact that there are more books on my shelves than I have life enough to read.

Ignorance. People fear, and ridicule, what they don't understand.

Education would go a long way to eradicate racism.
 
Education doesn't really eradicate racism. Oh, it makes racists less likely to express their racism, but it doesn't eradicate it.

What eradicates racism is experience. And the university, as it is currently designed--by which I mean the rampant Balkanization that characterizes the modern university--does little to bring the sort of experience necessary to eradicate racism to those students most likely to be racists.

We have fucked up, and in a big way, by abandoning the idea that we all have certain human universals in common. Instead, we focus only on those things that make the other Other, perpetuating racism, sexism, etc.

Number_6 is only a dick when provoked into being a dick. The direction this board has taken in the last month has been definite provocation. Anyone with an acronym in their signature is fair game until proven otherwise.

And I wish I could find my statement profound, instead of depressing. There was a time when I thought learning everything I wanted to learn was possible. Now simple math makes it appalling clear that there just aren't enough free hours left to me to read the things I thought I'd be able to read.
