Help!
My old iron just surrendered, right in the middle of ironing a huge heap of laundry. So now a new one must be bought asap.

I'm not really fond of these modern steam-blowing irons as they often tend to drip and to sound like an asthmatic coffee machine. If possible, I'd like to buy a normal, old-fashioned dry iron with a solid weight which gets really hot as I have lots of beautiful old bedlinnen from my great-grandma which is simply a nightmare to iron (the linnen, not the granny :P).


What iron do you use? Would you recommend yours? What brand/type is it? What are its pros and cons? (LOL sounds like a topic for a school essay)
 
Don't think I've ironed anything in more than a decade. I don't buy anything that won't go in the washing machine and requires no ironing. Know what you mean about the steam irons though - they were awful and left stains from the hot wet spots on any shiny fabrics. For the sheets, I'd take those to the laundry down the road. They wash, press, repair, and fold. It isn't cheap but it isn't cost prohibitive either, it provides them with work - an economic plus, and saves me the labor while still giving me the luxury.

Good luck on finding the iron. As I recall, Sunbeam was a good product for small household appliances and I've always been happy with my GE appliance purchases.
 
I haven't used an iron ever. My mom used to iron my dress pants and shirt. I just hang my stuff up or fold it neatly nowadays and it works fine for me.
 
I hate ironing. I own one, I know how to use it but we hate each other. Bastard bites me every time it gets plugged in. I still have and wear items that need ironing but I hang them up while they're still hot from the dryer and/or steam them while I'm in the shower. I've been thinking about buying a garment steamer for the more stubborn items.
 
Get Laurastar, they area few k, but will last u forevers and they are awesome, they make ironing easy; 3sec per item and they look brand new.
 
I just lightly mist my clothes with water and stick them in the dryer for 5 minutes. They're pretty wrinkle free after that.

if you have real linen you have to iron it. Else it's totally wrinkled and rather hard. IMO it's worth the effort, though. Genuine linen sheets are wonderfully cool in summer.

Thanks for the link, SuN, but a whole ironing station takes up too much space in my already crammed appartment. A normal iron and my living room table are ideal.

@ Dirk: would work well if I had a dryer. I've been thinking of buying one, but my bathroom is too small for it and I'd have to put it in the basement and always run up and down the stairs with baskets of laundry. Frankly, I am too lazy. Besides, it's cheaper to let the wind dry my stuff. And better for the fibers as well - I have quite a lot of silk items, old lace and other very sensitive bits of clothing :)
