Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

This movie looked stupid beyond words to me when I first saw the trailers for it. However, several people I know saw it and said it was a decent movie. Now, I've seen that movie.

I don't hate it. It has some good things about it. However, besides being historically inaccurate, it goes beyond the level of suspension of disbelief necessary for vampire movies and asks the audience to also suspend belief in what is known historical fact. If a writer is going to use a known fact to further the plot of their story, then what is static about that fact should remain true to what is known about that fact. Example, William was about 11 when he died, not about 3 or 4.

Also, while this movie takes itself entirely too seriously, it fails to offer much on the true known life of Lincoln. The story barely touches on the lawyer aspect of Lincoln and apparently his political career before he was President consisted mainly of standing in the street and making snippets of a speech. The unfolding of events left me thinking Lincoln went from a shopkeeper's assistant to President with years and very little else in between.

Now, for the axe. What an awkward weapon for vampire fighting - I don't care how much one twirls it around and embellishes it with silver. From the way this movie is designed, though, the axe action might be less stupid in 3d.

There are many more things I find objectionable about the storyline for this movie because the notions are pandering, altering history to prop up current sentiments based on emotion rather than fact.

What did I like about this movie? Not much. It is well made from the production value aspect. I liked the characters - Mary Todd, Lincoln's friends, Adam and the bad guys. I enjoyed the tiny twist at the end, though it wasn't entirely surprising. There was a good use of fact that while the fact was not altered, the fact was interpreted in a new way, and was actually plausible considering the subject matter and interesting. For the first time in awhile for a movie of this nature, I didn't feel like a couple of teenagers had tweeted the dialogue using the miniscule keyboard on their smartphone.

I've heard the book is very, very good, so, I may read the book and relegate this movie to the dust corners of my mind where other movies I've seen that aren't so great but aren't totally without merit reside.

Recommendation - if you go to the theater to see it, go to the bargain matinee and see it in 3d. Also, from what I've heard, don't read the book first or you will hate the movie. If you have read the book, don't see the movie at all.
