Was going to see Magic Mike but Amazing Spiderman was about to start and it was an hour and a half before Magic Mike started, so, saw Amazing Spiderman instead.
This is a reboot. The last bunch of Spiderman movies weren't bad but the cgi for Spiderman swinging around the city was awful.
I'd not been interested in seeing this reboot so it was a nice surprise to see some of my favorite actors - Martin Sheen and Sally Fields - in major roles. The girl that plays Gwynne I've seen elsewhere and she is a likeable looking person even though parts of her characterization in this movie were not quite believable. That wasn't her fault - that is the way the story is written. The kid that plays Peter Parker is a bean pole with a shock of hair and wild, rubbery looking lips wriggling all over his face. Still, he grew on me and I like him.
The story started out kind of slow to me. It isn't like the beginning of the story is new. In a way it is good that the reboot didn't try to change that part of the lore of Peter Parker since it is so well established. Still, it made for a slow start to the movie.
Did not expect rocket science, a spy thriller, a musical, or anything with a complicated plot, so the complicated boy with a crush on a cute girl storyline was okay. Actually, it is the same story structure for every one of the Spiderman movies. Complicated boy in a complicated relationship with a cute girl and when he isn't chasing after said cute girl he battles humans who have become mutant monsters.
The bad guy was an okay bad guy. Some scenes were pretty frightening. The cgi for that character, while pretty good in a lot of ways, needs some work to bring down the cheese factor a bit.
What was good and worth seeing about this reboot? The swinging Spiderman is a vast improvement over the previous movies' cgi. In fact, most of the time it seemed like it was an actual person doing all those stunts.
Also, Stan Lee's cameo was nice.
Saw this movie in 2D and it looked great. On leaving the theater, I saw that it was available on Imax also. Although I won't pay the Imax dollar to see this movie again, I wouldn't have complained about paying the Imax dollar to see it the first time.
