Alright, I'm going to post how I'd have altered the prequels to make them better later on. But right now, I want to talk about Anakin.
The MAIN problem of the prequels was that Anakin was ten. I sort of get what Lucas was going for, but it didn't work, especially in light of the stuff with Padme in AOTC.
So here's the change and a scene to go with it. Skywalker's seventeen when we meet him in TPM. 30 year-old Obi-Wan, his Padawan, and Queen Amidala of Naboo are hiding out on Tatooine. So far, so good. They're about to head to town to try and buy the parts they need when the queen's ship is attacked by a party of Tusken Raiders. Obi-Wan and his padawan fight bravely, as does the Queen's bodyguards, but they're overwhelmed by the number of Raiders.
In rides a hooded and cloaked figure on a hog of a speeder bike. This guy charges in with no blasters or other weapons, just a staff that looks like it was part of rusty old machinery. He doesn't have a whole lot of acrobatic skills or shit, but he can fight. The Raiders don't know who he is under the hood, but he's been fighting them off and on for years now. The mystery rider helps turn the tide, and then steps off his hog to introduce himself.
When he pulls the hood from his face, that's our first glimpse of Anakin: seventeen, rogueish good looks, long blond hair, strongly built, and tall. He and Padme fall instantly in love at first sight. She's never met anyone like him in her protected life as a teenage queen and he's never met anyone like her as a slave on a backwater planet.
Of course, Obi-Wan and Anakin don't get along at first. But during the climax of the film, Anakin saves Obi-Wan's bacon somehow and then gets aboard that Naboo starfighter at the film's end. But this time, instead of "whoops!," we have a guy who is a fucking master behind the controls. Thus the end of the first film shows us what Obi-Wan meant when he said "He was the best starpilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. And he was a good friend."
We should have seen this in the first film, not a dopey handshake between these two.
Anyway, I'll post more later.
