Ricky Ponting's incredible century when Australia and India last met in a World Cup final still gives Indian supporters nightmares

Having gone through the tournament unbeaten, Australia saved their most complete performance of the 2003 World Cup for the final in Johannesburg.

Sent in to bat by India skipper Sourav Ganguly, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden provided a lightning start before captain Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn combined for a record partnership that all-but secured Australia's third World Cup title.

Ponting took 74 balls to reach his half-century, hitting just one boundary, before he unleashed an extraordinary attack in the final overs.

‘This pips it all’: Australia breaks a billion hearts with ‘unbelievable’ World Cup win

Even the English were forced to admit this was the “greatest World Cup victory” for any team after Australia broke a billion hearts.

Australia has secured the greatest victory in its one-day history - and perhaps a top 10 Aussie sporting moment of all time - by spoiling what appeared to be an Indian coronation in the World Cup Final.

A supreme performance with the ball led by captain Pat Cummins and one of the great innings from Travis Head secured a six-wicket win with 42 balls to spare and left the hosts a sobbing mess.

While it may not have been the most thrilling of finals, it was a stunning victory nonetheless as Head and Marnus Labuschagne overcame some early blushes to silence the 120,000-strong pro-Indian crowd in the stadium, and more than a billion more watching from home.

India deny Australia with thrilling last-ball win in opening T20

Josh Inglis smashed Australia’s joint-fastest century in Twenty20 Internationals before Suryakumar Yadav powered India to a two-wicket victory in a thrilling series opener on Thursday.

Suryakumar, captaining India for the first time, hit an assured knock of 80 as the hosts chased down 208 in Visakhapatnam and secured a small measure of revenge for their painful defeat by Australia in the 50-overs World Cup final on Sunday.

Ishan Kishan (58) and Suryakumar shared a 112-run partnership but India lost momentum after both players departed and the chase went down to the final ball of the match when Rinku Singh guided his team over the line.

After the Aussies smashed a strong score of 208/3 in 20 overs – thanks to Josh Inglis' brilliant 110 off just 50 balls – captain Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan produced brilliant half-century knocks to take the hosts close to the finishing line. However, the duo's departure propelled the Aussies back into the game, and a tight penultimate over from Nathan Ellis – in which he only conceded 6 overs – made the match exciting right at the end.
