Bills owner Terry Pegula made racist comment, lawsuit alleges

Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula allegedly made a racist comment about Black players in the NFL, according to a racial discrimination lawsuit against the league filed Tuesday by longtime reporter Jim Trotter. Trotter alleges in the lawsuit that in 2020, a fellow NFL Media reporter recalled a conversation he had with Pegula, who was speaking to the reporter about the NFL's social justice initiatives and Black Lives Matter. The reporter, who was not identified in the lawsuit, told Trotter and approximately 40 other NFL Media coworkers during a Zoom call that Pegula said, "If the Black players don't like it here, they should go back to Africa and see how bad it is." The lawsuit states that Trotter, who is Black, pressed executives at NFL Media to investigate Pegula's comments, which were "highly offensive and racist," but that he was "repeatedly brushed off and told that 'the league office is investigating it.'" The lawsuit also mentions Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who allegedly told Trotter in 2020 that "If Blacks feel some kind of way, they should buy their own team and hire who they want to hire." "The NFL and team owners have repeatedly shown they are unable to monitor and police themselves, making these equitable measures a necessary component of any awarded relief," the lawsuit says.

Bills, Sabres owner Terry Pegula denies allegations of racist comments

Bills and Sabres owner Terry Pegula has denied making racist comments that were attributed to him in a lawsuit filed in a New York City court on Tuesday. Pegula is mentioned multiple times in the lawsuit against the NFL and NFL Network, which was filed by former NFL Network reporter Jim Trotter. One example alleges that Pegula said, in reference to player protests against racial injustice, “if the Black players don’t like it here, they should go back to Africa and see how bad it is.

Pegula swiftly denied the allegation on Tuesday. “The statement attributed to me in Mr. Trotter’s complaint is absolutely false. I am horrified that anyone would connect me to an allegation of this kind,” Pegula said in a statement. “Racism has no place in our society and I am personally disgusted that my name is associated with this complaint.” The comments are alleged to have been made at a large NFL Media Zoom meeting in September 2020, where a reporter described a conversation he had with Pegula about the Black Lives Matter movement and player emphasis on social activism.

NFL journalist Jim Trotter alleges discriminatory comments by Jerry Jones, Terry Pegula in retaliation lawsuit

Former NFL Network journalist Jim Trotter filed a retaliation lawsuit against the NFL on Tuesday alleging his contract was not renewed because he called out NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the league's lack of diversity. The lawsuit, which features a detailed timeline of Trotter's termination, also accuses Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula of making discriminatory comments when asked about player protests and the league's diversity efforts. The lawsuit accuses Pegula of stating Black players should "go back to Africa" after being asked about player protests against racial injustice. Trotter's lawsuit alleges Pegula responded to a question about the protests by stating, "If the Black players don't like it here, they should go back to Africa and see how bad it is." Trotter claims he raised complaints over that comment, though the league allegedly did not take action.

Trotter also accuses Jones of stating, "If Blacks feel some kind of way, they should buy their own team and hire who they want to hire" when asked about the league's poor track record of hiring Black professionals. Trotter claims he raised complaints over Jones' comment, but the league failed to take action. Jones also responded to the allegations in a statement Tuesday. He referenced a conversation with Will McClay, who is Black, in his response. McClay was hired to the Cowboys personnel department as assistant director of player personnel in 2013. He has been promoted twice since then, most recently to his current role in 2017.

Roger Goodell responds to NFL Media lawsuit that includes Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Bills owner Terry Pegula

Jim Trotter, who previously worked for NFL Media, has filed a discrimination and retaliation lawsuit against the NFL and his former company, per Wigdor. Trotter claims that he repeatedly called out the league for not addressing, "long-standing, institutional discrimination within the coaching ranks, the NFL league office and NFL Media newsroom," and that it affected his own employment. Trotter claims he was told there was no reason his contract with NFL Media would not be renewed earlier this year, but after challenging NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on systemic race discrimination, things changed. Trotter claimed he was later asked if he was "in alignment" with the NFL, and did not receive the new contract he was expecting.
