Students shun cafeteria for fast food

High school students in Fredericton are avoiding the new healthy menu in their cafeteria and spending their lunch money at burger joints instead.

Schools in District 18 banned junk food this fall to make room for more nutritious options. That means school cafeterias are serving up fruit and vegetables instead of burgers and fries.

Unfortunately for the company that runs the cafeteria, it also means when the lunch bell rings, teens pile out of their middle and high schools looking for student specials at local fast-food restaurants.

Caityln Daigle, a student at Fredericton High School, says she won't spend money on food she doesn't want to eat. "I think that our cafeteria is just like, losing business now because students are just going to go to other places and get what they want there."

Carol Morgan is a nutritionist with the Chartwells, the company that runs the cafeteria at Fredericton High School. She admits the new menu is hurting the bottom line.

"We have seen a drop in sales due to the policy. It could be impacting our labour, staffing hours, so although we have seen that change, we're committed to making this work."

Morgan says it takes education and awareness to make people eat healthier. She thinks the new policy is a step in the right direction, even if it's taking some time for students to catch on.

I think people are already educated and aware -- I think nothing is going to make people eat healthier, because people have a choice. You want to dictate what individuals eat? Go fucking herd cattle. In my opinion, I think it's time for Fredericton High School to "catch on." Fucking biofascists.

I don't see religious conservatives losing money hand over fist on failed social engineering experiments in our public schools. But I still don't understand why you think serving healthy food is such a terrible thing. They are not, as you claim, "making" students eat healthily. Students can choose whether or not they want to eat at the cafeteria--nobody's forcing them to do anything. What is the problem here?

I understood you perfectly. You suggested that religious conservatives were not allowed to teach religion in school. As I've proven, that is false.

I don't think you do. Schools don't make students eat in the cafeteria, but they do make students attend science class. If religion is taught in science class, students have no choice but to attend.

What is the mission of public schools in the first place? In a broad sense, we might say that their mission is to prepare young people to be successful citizens, both economically and socially. To be successful--to hold down a job or to form rewarding relationships with other people--you have to be healthy. You can't work or make friends if you're debilitated, bed-ridden or stuck in the hospital. Eating heathy food is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy. Therefore, encouraging students to be healthy by serving food that's good for them clearly supports the mission of public schools. The same can't be said for teaching religion in science class.

I think its pretty much common knowledge that cafeteria food in any form is going to be disgusting. Having burgers and fries instead of organic pasta and salad is only slightly more appetizing because the grease and preservates at least make it look edible.

I'm not exactly sure when the school teachers, districts, and nutritionists became parents of other people's children but nutrition and good eating habits start at home. You can feed fat Jimmy all the rabbit food you want at school but when he gets home he's still going to eat a box of Ding-Dongs. It's absolutely stupid to not give kids a choice, their one school meal isn't going to help or hurt them.
