Blue Ray backwards compatable?

Title of the thread says it all - Will blue ray machines be backward compatable with existing DVDs?

I'm been thinking of getting a flatscreen TV and entertainment center for upstairs, where I do most of my hanging out. I've postponed it for a while because I've read elsewhere that flatscreens (both plasma and LCD) are going to be coming down significantly. If Blue Ray is backwards compatable, I might wait a bit longer. If not, well...............

Isn't Blue-Ray winning the fight against HD-DVD? I've seen commercials on the telly with shit like, "Coming to DVD, and coming soon to Blue-Ray..."

I have a large DVD collection.

I will be HIGHLY pissed off if it becomes obsolete.

I use my old betamax tapes to keep my desk level...I don't need more stuff like that.

I think the industry learned a little something from the Minidisc debacle... no one is willing to either: spend the time copying their already usable CDs to Minidisc - or - buy everything they already own all over again for a new format.

2.2 Will Blu-ray be backwards compatible with DVD?

Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. In fact, most of the Blu-ray players coming out will support upscaling of DVDs to 1080p/1080i, so your existing DVD collection will look even better than before. While it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with DVDs.

Ok, looks like I'll wait a bit longer then.

thanks for the link.

Aw, hell.

I've just read elsewhere (wordforge, actually) that blu-ray players will be between $900 to $1500 bucks.

Screw that noise. I'll wait a few years, thank you very much.

Remember DVD player prices when they first came out? It was around $500.00 for a player that would be worth $80.00 today. I think we're all going to wait a few years.

yes Ish. I remember when a pioneer cd player cost $1,000 and a stupid motley crue cd cost $70, for sure it is best to wait.
