Boxing results: Jake Paul defeats Mike Tyson by decision

Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson by unanimous decision in an eight-round heavyweight match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Friday. All three judges scored the fight for Paul, 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73. The fight, sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, was contested at 2-minute rounds, and both fighters wore 14-ounce gloves instead of the regular 10-ounce gloves for heavyweight fights. Tyson, 58, and Paul, 27, the YouTuber-turned-boxer, were scheduled to meet on July 20, but the fight was postponed tafter Tyson received medical attention during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles in May for an ulcer flare-up.

Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs) became the youngest heavyweight champion at age 20 in 1986, and a year later he had unified all three major belts to become undisputed champion. He made six defenses of the three belts until losing in a historic upset to James "Buster" Douglas by 10th-round KO in February 1990. Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) started his boxing career in 2020 with six consecutive victories fighting mostly against former MMA fighters. Paul's only loss came against Tommy Fury in February 2023, but he has won five straight fights, including the decision over Tyson, since.

Jake Paul discloses why he didn't knock out Mike Tyson

Despite the initial hype for the fight, that anticipation quickly died down when both Jake Paul and Mike Tyson essentially engaged in a sparring session in front of the 70,000 fans in attendance—and the millions watching at home. Both sides looked primed and ready to perform heading into the bout but that wasn't the case once the fight got underway. The pair barely threw any power shots and 'The Problem Child' refused to engage in close quarters with the knockout artist, though he has since cleared up why that was the case.

According to Jake Paul, his less than satisfactory performance was all by design. The controversial star claimed that he let Mike Tyson off the hook instead of pushing the pace against the 58-year-old. "Yeah, definitely took my foot off the gas]," Paul told media during the post-fight press conference. "Definitely a bit." "I wanted to give the fans a show but I didn't want to hurt someone that didn't need to be hurt." "[I carried him] a little bit. There was a point where I was just like he's not really engaging back and I don't know if he's tired or whatever." "I could just tell his age was showing a little bit."

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson live updates: Paul wins in absolute snoozer
While Tyson managed to win the first two rounds, Paul found his groove and landed a whopping 78 of his 278 thrown punches to just 18 of Tyson’s 97 attempts. Still, the final rounds came with boos from the AT&T Stadium crowd, and neither combatant made much effort to do anything as the clock ran down on the two-minute rounds.

Mike Tyson wasn’t taking his fight with Jake Paul to add to his stats — neither the 44 knockouts nor the 50-6 record. This wasn’t just about the $20 million payout either, though the lump sum is likely the most he’d ever earned for one fight.
