COLIN KAEPERNICK

In the 49ers' third preseason game in 2016, Kaepernick sat during the playing of the U.S. national anthem prior to the game, rather than stand as is customary, as a protest against racial injustice, police brutality and oppression in the country. The following week, and throughout the regular season, Kaepernick Kneeled during the anthem. The protests received highly polarized reactions, with some praising his protests and others denouncing the protests. The actions resulted in a wider protest movement, which intensified in September 2017 after President Donald Trump said that NFL owners should "fire" players who protest during the national anthem. Kaepernick became a free agent after the season and remained unsigned, which numerous analysts and observers have attributed to political reasons. His protests received renewed attention in 2020 amid the George Floyd protest against police brutality and racism, but he remains unsigned by any professional football team.

Jim Harbaugh wants to hire Colin Kaepernick for Chargers' staff

Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh wants to give quarterback Colin Kaepernick a job -- on his coaching staff, not his roster. Harbaugh said he reached out to Kaepernick shortly after he took over the Chargers in January about joining him in Los Angeles in a non-playing capacity. Kaepernick, 36, played for Harbaugh when he coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14. He has been out of the league since 2016 but recently restated his desire to resume his playing career.

Kaepernick reached an undisclosed settlement with the NFL in 2019 after arguing that owners had colluded to keep him out of the league, essentially blackballing him after he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice. Kaepernick posted a 28-30 record with San Francisco from 2011-16, passing for 12,271 yards with 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The 2011 second-round pick took the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII, where they lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Jim Harbaugh: Colin Kaepernick won't coach Chargers this year

If Colin Kaepernick wants to join the Los Angeles Chargers, it will not be until next year at the earliest. And it will only be as a member of Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff. Harbaugh, who coached Kaepernick in San Francisco from 2011 through 2014, told USA Today Sports earlier this week that he reached out to Kaepernick about joining his Chargers' staff shortly after being named coach on Jan. 24. Kaepernick, who turns 37 on Nov. 3, has not played in an NFL game since Jan. 1, 2017, after he began kneeling on the sideline at games during the national anthem to protest social injustice and police brutality. Kaepernick, who played six seasons with San Francisco after being a second-round pick in 2011, still has hopes though of playing again. He told Britain's "Sky Sports News" during the recent Paris Olympics that he is still training.

Kaepernick had a 29-16 record as a starter, including the playoffs, when Harbaugh was his coach. After Harbaugh left to go to Michigan, Kaepernick's record was 3-17. Kaepernick was the starting quarterback in Super Bowl XLVII against Baltimore. He was 16 of 28 for 302 yards with a touchdown and also ran for a score in San Francisco's 34-31 loss. Harbaugh has three players he coached in San Francisco on his Chargers staff -- NaVorro Bowman, Jonathan Goodwin and Will Tukuafu. Mike Iupati and Delanie Walker were coaching assistants during training camp while Dashon Goldson is a coaching intern for the season. Greg Roman, who was Kaepernick's offensive coordinator in San Francisco from 2011 through 2014, is also directing the Chargers' offense.
