Computer Help PLEASE

I listen to most of my music using my computer...for some reason there is static in the background all of the sudden. At first I thought it was the headphones I was using...switched them and it is still there. The static is present without headphones, as well.

And ideas?? This really pisses me off...

Windows?

Open the volume control panel and set some of the settings down. my cheapo sound card hisses and pops when set wide open.

Stupid question first... have you rebooted yet?

Smartass question next... have you updated your drivers lately? Stock drivers or no?

Have you ever shot compressed air at your computer?

Bad dog is probably right (ack, did I say that?). Adjust your volumn in a few different places to get below the humm.

If you're using Winamp make sure that that your equalizer settings are correct as well. Winamp has the tendency to put them all on max without asking.

There are other things that could cause it, some of them rare some common.

It's possible that your Sound Card is on the same IRQ channel as another device, but thats a long shot. If it's not a simple volume issue then do the following.

Click the start button and go to the run command. Once there type "dxdiag" without the quote marks. Your Direct X diagnostic window will open. Once it has go to the Sound tab and bring the slider down from full acceleration to standard and test again. Is the static persists then you may want to update your drivers and see if that works.

You may want to see if there are any DMA conflicts as well. Click on START MENU>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM then access Device Manager.Make sure there are no yellow exclamation marks on any of your devices. It could also be feedback from the PSU but that's pretty unlikley. If all else fails switch the sound card to another PCI slot.

Tried that last night.

No, haven't rebooted yet. I'll try that first.

And my computer is kept near an AC vent...but it's always been there with no problem.

Thanks! Will try this after I reboot...

hardware

on board sound cards tend to be noisy especially when used with headphones

you can hear the hard drive noise, etc...

audigy was a suggestion since they are sweet

The Question said:
^^Driver-wise, or hardware-wise? What, is there an Audigy 3 now?

Audigy 4 actully. It's supposed to be better then anything else (gives 7.1 surround sound for everything and other BS), but I'd say my Audigy 2 ZS gaming edition blows the fuck out of it.

I had a system crash this morning. boot, wallpaper, NOOOOO buttons.no desktop, just wallpapaper. After ten minutes, buttons. instead of the annoying Welcome Orchestra, It's beepig all over the place. So I did a system recovery repair. So far so good. Except I use a Verizon card for broadband. Soi try to reload that. I go through the pages until it gets to " Insert pci card now" It's in. It won't go to the next step, because it's still demanding I insert the card in the slot.

Pull it out and shove it back in... most times those installers want to detect the insertion of the card... not the actual card in the slot.

If that don't work, pull it out (lol) reboot with it out, and try the install again, shoving the card in when the installer tells you.

Ouch... try uninstalling whatever portion of the drivers are already installed, shut down, remove the card, start up, install drivers, insert card when prompted. I got my fingers crossed for ya.

it's working! There was another piece of hardware that i only found by accident. there's no mention in the userguide. it uses the same CD. No Mention in the user guide. On a lark, I inserted my verizon cd. Bingo. The missing piece. They will do anything to make you call tech support for a charge.
