So, the show premiered last night. I thought it was pretty good. I love the way it looks. I've never read the comics so I can't compare it and determine how true it is, but I liked it. ALSO BEAR.

Constantine was an awesome segue in the Swamp Thing series. Intro'd in the 37th issue of one of the story arcs written by Alan Moore. Although Bissette was the regular artist of the series, Veitch drew that particular issue, which was considered the "origin". He got his own book later (Hellblazer) which ran forever.

I'll check out the show, because it's a GREAT concept.

YOU CAN DO IT!

I just read that "Liv" was written out of the show after the pilot episode, she was cute :rwmad: I think they were having trouble deciding how she should behave or something. One minute she was freaked out about everything and the next she wasn't so perhaps it's for the best. The pilot suffered from being a pilot, IMO. I think the show has some really good potential.

Constantine thread

Since it doesn't seem to have one. I'm fond of the character so I watched the pilot last night. It's been a week and Pilots are pretty generic so forgive me if I spoiler anything.
Initial impression: not a bad start for a pilot. Constantine was introduced in media res, he's already seen a world of bad stuff and he's retired/mentally disabled by his past. Quickly gets past his powerset, his curmudgeonly nature, his legendary sardonic attitude, and his essential need to protect others from really bad demons etc.
The pilot gets sidetracked for a while by a setup story that introduces a pretty young chick with the cliche "mysterious absent parent was secretly super powered protector and surprise you just got powers and inherited fill-in-the-blank mystic toy." The good news is that the writers of the show immediately saw the utter lack of chemistry there and wrote the chick out of the show; she's Happy Days' Chuck by the end of the pilot. They didn't even give her a goodbye scene lol, just two guys in a bar and one goes, "so that chick split town. Like, forever. And she left her toy you're gonna need for future episodes so there's that."
One potential problem: Constantine has been a grumpy trench coated comic demon hunter since at least the 80's or 90's. The show Supernatural clearly borrowed heavily from his story for their characters. BUT that show has been around for a decade so Constantine showing up now with asshole angels, shape-shifting demons with funny eyes, protective wards all over the place and grumpy trench coated assholes as the protector of the world...he comes off as the ripoff. They also seem to have sanitized the Occult aspect by ChristianizING his powers.
Anyway, the show has stated there will be a focus shift and one can't read too much into it. But it has a little promise. Worth a couple looks.

Oh, oops. I looked but somehow missed it. Carry on. If somebody with mod powers felt like merging this thread I would not object.

I DID IT!

I look forward to reading your opinion on the show since you are a fan of the comic.

Well like I said above, my main concerns are that they cluttered up his powers with Xian overtones. The comic Constantine is more purely occult, he basically sees it as his job to fight the worst sorts of evil so no one else has to, and that justifies pretty much any nasty thing he does. Comicstantine is a bastard plain and simple. NBC might not want that on network tv. And the fact that Supernatural ripped them off so many years before ConstanTV did it back at them means they'll have to be extra good to avoid obvious comparisons.
I originally loved that Harold Perineau and the Faraday guy are in it. Just not sure about Perrineau's grumpy angel. He's like Lou Diamond Philips for me: I love his acting but am beginning to realize he's been riding on the strength of a couple early performances for years.

In the comments of a review site I read there were people complaining that Constantine was ripping off Supernatural, but there were plenty of Constantine fans who came along and set them straight, lol. I only watched one season of Supernatural, and it's very silly, hopefully Constantine will set itself apart from Supernatural by not being so silly. I don't mind silly stuff, but I think I prefer the more serious horror style that Constantine looks like it will have. I hope they don't fuck it up.

What I'd really like to see but probably won't happen is Constantine hinting at interactions with traditional "capes" in DC universe, because.hos.character hates the spandex set. But character film and tv rights being what they are it's unlikely. However there are a ton of underused magic and demonic types available, and Liv DID pick up the recently revealed as nasty Helmet of Fate. How about some guest shots by the House of.Mystery or Cain or Ertrigan etc? Just depends how many they will allow.

I liked it and I thought it would be pretty fucking scary for a little kid that was raised Catholic... fortunately, I'm over that now and can appreciate creepy devil monsters and weirdo angels My second favorite new show of the season.

I wonder if every week it will be MONSTER OF THE WEEK, or if they will be able to make it all more interesting by having an ongoing storyline. I hope they can find the balance.

This week's episode was pretty damn ed (lol) good, not so much for the lame Rockstar crossroads story but for the character development. Zed is much more engaging thanot Liv was, her character makes more sense in Constantine world than the college kid Harriet Potter chick. Plus Constantine was shown in a more occult light with a bit less "agent of god" and Papa Midnight is a great add. I'd love to see some other DC dark people show up. Deadman, Etrigan, Zatanna...maybe even Alec Holland. Much better third episode.

Yeah, I liked it too. The only thing that bugged me a bit was the sorta audience hand holding. Like explaining the magic card, and the magic nails (and I think there was something else but I can't remember). I guess they have to do that for people who might never have watched a show like this. I DON'T KNOW.
