copying only a portion of a song from CD?

I am looking to copy a snippet of a song from one of my cds. Is there an easy, free and legal way to do this?

Rip the song, then download a program like this one, Audacity (free). Pull the song (Mp3 or wav) into Audacity and edit it however you like.

There may be better methods, but this one works for me.
