Do we sit upon past glories
Watching the steam slowly escape the mound
Congratulating ourselves on wit long gone?
Do we listen to echoes
Laughter and cruel spite
Saying "Look how cool we were"?
And what of today
Are we lazy and fat
Sitting in the sun, burning but claiming we are just getting tan?
Slather us all in goose fat
put is in the kiln
but turn the heat up slowly, so we don't move.
I see it all, have seen it all
Now we are all too kind
The anger is gone, taking too much in energy.
We are like the old quarterback
the faded flower of that head cheerleader
too many cigarettes and booze have made us ugly
Yes, when fresh blood comes
the next generation
we hold them up against our past and say "meh".
What have we done lately?
I ask you, my compatriots
Where is the edge?
I am not sad about it
but I do not have the capability for self-deception
And tire of thinking myself as "mean" anymore.
We were good and proud once
Very good
But we have succumbed to rust.
