Unluckiest Charm in the Box

Pot is illegal. But what about things that taste like pot? That means lawn grass should be illegal. Unvaccumed carpets should be illegal. My Uncle Lionel’s toupee should be illegal. But what about candy that’s meant to actually taste like pot?

ATLANTA - Candy that’s flavored like marijuana would be outlawed under a bill proposed in the state Senate.

The effort, spearheaded by Sen. Vincent Fort, D-Atlanta, is one of several throughout the nation targeting increasingly popular candies marketed with drug-inspired names like Purple Haze and advertised with slogans such as, “Every Lick is Like Taking a Hit.”

Marketers call the treats a harmless novelty. But anti-drug advocates say they glorify drug use and encourage children to smoke pot.

The bill, if passed, would make the selling of pot and hemp flavored candy a pretty serious felony. The punishment would be five years in prison and a fine of $5,000. Wow, in most cases, possessing the real thing is only a misdemeanor and the people who get busted have enough to bail out of jail and catch “SpongeBob SquarePants” while they’re still high.

The companies who sell the candies claim there isn’t anything illegal about what they are doing. They are just selling candy that happens to taste like drugs, but without any of the medicinal side-effects of drugs. They’ve even got some new drug candies in development such as Weedtarts, Crackel chocolate bars and Coke Peppermint Patties.

Those who are against them say they introduce children to the addictive powers of real weed. Addicting them to sugar on the other hand, that’s OK.
