External Hard Drive

Ok, now that I have the FireWire card up and running, I really need to get an external harddrive. My Dell only has a 70G internal, and I really don't want to mess around and install a bigger HD. Not when I can get an external from Best Buy for like $179.

Any recommendations as far as manufacturer? Should I just get the biggest size and be done with it? I have lots of home videos and tons of tv shows and such I'll be transferring.

Get a big size. Over 200GB at least to make it worth it. But also check the speed of the disk. 7200 RPM is the standard and that will be fine but if you come across a faster speed then go for it.

Cool, thanks! I REALLY wanna be able to keep every season of Veronica Mars, in case others want it. Even though I bought season one and will buy season two as well!

 

[The Question]

Maxtor makes a 300Gb OneTouch II drive, and those aren't just hitting the market, so you should be able to get a pretty good deal. I believe they can use either FireWire or USB 2.0.

Alternatively, here's a Seagate drive, same specs.

I don't know....a dual layer external dvd burner is like 45 bucks now and 9 gig media is about 1.50 each these days.

Make sure you have all (or most) of the latest Windows updates before hooking up an external drive of more than 100GB. Before they fixed it a while ago, there was a problem reading drives larger than that. I lost a whole drive's worth of data that way recently.
