And curiously, I think in last week's episode Stewie destroyed his time machine, so they want to at least give the appearance that this is irreversible, and not a fake-out.

I'm glad cause I didn't care for Vinny. Although I am surprised they brought Brian back so soon, figured they would milk it for longer.

Seth McFarland is a cold, soulless misanthrope whose sense of humor should be medicated.
The only reason the first 5-6 seasons of Family Guy are funny is because he held back his more basic impulses and actually tried to write jokes and funny situations. Now he just fills in the non-joke portions of his episodes with multiple scenes of casual bloody, gory cartoon violence.
This became obvious to me as I watched him attempt to host the Oscars -- he has no discernable personality. He is most like a shark, with those dead, pitch-black eyes, his only purpose to chew up pop culture and poop it back out. He expresses his musical talent to emulate Frank Sinatra, another humorless douche who craved and sought power & influence.
And people are still gobbling up his shit, and making themselves feel better about it by bitching about it on the internet the next day.
