Final Fantasy VII - Remake (And Final Fantasy General)

Sony is finally getting my money.

This is the first game that I HAVE to own that is exclusive to a console I don't possess (the last console I bought was a Dreamcast)

I didn't think they would do a good job when I first heard they were developing it and then the episodic nature of the releases worried me. Now I am not worried. I hope I live long enough to play the entire thing!

Maximillion Dood (pro-Street Fighter player and FF super fan) reaction was great. The developers admitted to watching his reactions on reveals to stay motivated whilst trying to be faithful to the FFVII remake.

I still haven't played any Final Fantasies. I'm sure I would enjoy some of them, there's just so many games on Switch that it's hard to commit to another massive JRPG...

Get Final Fantasy IX Remaster on the Switch. I played the remaster on PC when it came out last year (was it last year or the year before -- WHERE DOES TIME GO) and had an absolute blast with it. I had just as much fun as I did back in the day on the PS1 (that's saying something.) It's a great jumping-in point and one of the best FF's. (the games are self-contained stories.)

As for the VII remake... It looks unbelievable. You can tell they are slaving away to be as faithful as possible and are not even slightly interested in putting out a half-assed cash grab. I am actually going to get a PS4 to play it alone.

And yes, they are commitments, no doubt. They're big games. But they're worth it. There are so many JRPG's on the market and so many FF clones but they never quite get close to FF at its best.

As the guy says in the video, it nails everything. Characters, setting, story and combat system are all off the charts good. IX and VII have the best writing of the entire series as well. You can't not get emotionally invested in it.

Finally beat Zalera after a major slog through the Barheim passage. Put him as a summon on Vann for the extra HP. His animations and specials are cool af.

I want to play Dragon Quest 11 after watching the TIm Rogers review.

Guys you need to get someone to do a Final Fantasy review to win me back.

Our first proper look at Jenova, Red XIII and Cloud in a dress. Give me this game now. We're going back to 1997. In HD.

Still haven't played any, realistically it's unlikely that I will since I have no childhood nostalgia for them and as of next month Animal Crossing will be the only game I ever play again in my life. But I still have that watch list!

All the Final Fantasies are 50% off on Switch right now. Is IX definitely the one I shoud play? What about The Zodiac Age, people seem to like that?

Yay. I'm hype you're taking the plunge.

IX and XII (Zodiac) are two of my absolute favourite in the entire series and it pains me to pick between then when suggesting which one to play but I'd probably lean towards IX for your first Final Fantasy experience. Zodiac Age is quite a departure in mechanics and style from the previous entries whilst IX is a more traditional experience but pulled off with absolute perfection. They're both masterpieces tbh, but yeah, I'd lean towards IX for sure. If you love it like I expect you will then by all means pick up XII afterwards.

XII is quite experimental and can divide opinion because of it (it took me a while to get used to it and I wasn't sure I liked it when I first started although once I got the hang of it I loved it) whilst IX just nails absolutey everything that is great about the series right off the bat from character, story, mechanics, explorations, secrets, bosses, etc. It's probably the most distilled Final Fantasy game ever made.

Also Princess Garnet is too precious.

The best Final Fantasy is X-2. You might want to play X first to get to know the setting, but you don't need to!

X-2 is really interesting in that:
-The protagonists are a pop star trio
-They're also magical girls with transformation sequences
-The thematic core of the game is basically "you saved the world in X, but the world *always continues to need saving*". You revisit all the places and people and organisations that you saw in X, and see how they're faring in the new world you made possible after X. It's about the hard work of reconstruction and breaking cycles and how there's no moment at the end when you're done and things are okay.
-You know, like Television's Angel
-But with pop stars
-And the battle system is great!
