I also toy with the trolls occasionally when I want a good laugh- by using your "mocking" technique - I assign their posts a "troll-o-meter" rating, that simply drove one troll bananas - and he went berserk posting flames after that. I then "branded" him again, pasting his Google URL profile link, which lists all his posts he just made while he was in a rage - making him look even worse.
Crap troll, then.

Chances are, whassisface was probably getting at an innocent poster.

Heh, teh irony. Probably ended up making a troll where there was none before. :D

^I think you got the context wrong. One was about Free Speech, the other letting yourself get sucked in through flaming.

Refuse to be Silenced: Accuse your opponent of attempting censorship, even though its probably a tad of an exaggeration. It is your right to post whatever you want to the net, even tasteless, obscene or boring notes. On the other hand, you might stop for a moment to consider your audience's right not to be upset, insulted or bored. Posting privately can be a sensible - and honourable - strategy: but your words may be copied publicly. Think about it.

Alternatively white can sometime be black, then vice versa. Black is dark, but may also be light at times. Think about it.

Never underestimate the power of silence. Flame Wars, like it or not, are a clash of egos; and a public one at that. Being ignored will rattle all but the most experienced protagonist. But this is a positive action, not to be confused with sulking. Your self control, if you are consistent, will enhance your reputation. It is worth having a policy on silence, such as:

1. Never respond to simple abuse, it only encourages them
2. Never respond immediately; always see the number - and quality - of posts
3. Never respond to two-centers - go for quality
4. Never respond to clinical insanity - chances are you cannot help, and you risk a life-long relationship

Silence can be golden!

I don't see them contradicting each other. I believe the author is giving motivation or an angle of attack in the first one, and a suggestion on when to respond and when not to in the second one. It's not mind-bogglingly contradictory.

I wonder if this mental giant realizes in trying to look "hip" with flayme.com has really ended up announcing what a tool he is and invites the world to take a turn with him:

Flay me.
