Lawson details his 2024 options after missing out on F1 seat despite super-sub appearances for AlphaTauri

AlphaTauri super-sub Liam Lawson has outlined his expected 2024 options after he missed out on a permanent seat on the F1 grid.

The New Zealander was thrust into emergency action back in Zandvoort, after Daniel Ricciardo broke his hand in a practice crash, and would go on to compete in five Grands Prix for AlphaTauri in place of the Australian. Plaudits quickly came the way of the 21-year-old for his performances – particularly his ninth-placed points finish in Singapore – and suddenly it felt as if AlphaTauri had a real dilemma as to who they would opt to select as their driver pairing next year.

F1 tries to recover from embarrassing first day of Las Vegas Grand Prix

AS VEGAS (AP) — Formula One is hoping to turn its luck around on the Strip, like so many other Las Vegas visitors who blow a big bankroll on arrival.

The elite global motorsports series placed a $500 million gamble on a new event in Sin City promoted for the first time by F1 and owner Liberty Media. But it now must recover after an opening-night debacle in which the first practice was ruined just nine minutes in when Carlos Sainz Jr. ran over a water valve cover on the temporary street course.

“Judge us by what happens when the checkered flag falls on Saturday,” asked Williams team principal James Vowles.

When Sainz bottomed out on the drainage valve minutes into Thursday night’s first practice, it caused extensive damage to the underbody of his Ferrari and Sainz said the piece broke through far enough to damage his seat. F1 then closed the course to inspect the entire 3.85-mile (6.2 kilometer) circuit that utilizes a long portion of the Strip.

10 things we learned from the 2023 F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix

From a glitzy Las Vegas Grand Prix opening show to a race that delivered what Formula 1 needed the most, this weekend the series had a little bit of everything. Here’s a dive into the key talking points from the newest and most eye-catching race on the calendar

Formula 1's first visit to Las Vegas in 40 years was a bombastic affair off the circuit but delivered an action-packed race after a difficult start to the weekend.

Although Max Verstappen assumed his regular role on the top step of the podium, he had to fight to get there - and briefly looked fallible as Charles Leclerc challenged him all the way. But those who had put their chips on red were disappointed as Leclerc couldn't quite overcome the odds to beat Verstappen; the house had won once again.

***Formula 1 in meltdown over explosive Lewis Hamilton counterclaim***

All hell has broken loose at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with Formula 1’s two biggest stars at the centre of a storm.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has tossed a grenade into the pit lane as the season-ending event roared into the United Arab Emirates.

Horner dropped a sensational claim Lewis Hamilton earlier this year approached him about moving to the Red Bull team.

Hamilton responded on Friday morning (AEDT) by turning the table on the Red Bull principal, suggesting Horner has approached him about the potential move.

Max Verstappen has now rejected the notion his team were considering approaching Lewis Hamilton to partner him in a dream line-up.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner was quoted in the British media this week claiming that Hamilton’s management team has “reached out” several times, adding that “earlier this year there was an inquiry about whether there would be any interest”.

What we learned from Friday practice at the F1 Abu Dhabi GP

On the final Friday practice of the 2023 Formula 1 season, there were plenty of new faces on show, with 10 rookies in action in Abu Dhabi's FP1 session.

But, when the full complement of grand prix drivers returned for second practice, the running was stalled by two red flags, which muddied the waters at the Yas Marina Circuit.

George Russell and Charles Leclerc topped two intriguing Formula 1 practice sessions at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, amid a swathe of rookie appearances in FP1 and incidents in FP2.

In total 10 rookies and reserves assumed driving duties during the first of the two timed sessions on Friday as most teams opted to use one of their mandatory 'young' driver allowances in the last FP1 session of the year, already restricting track time for half of the 2023 F1 regulars at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Hamilton: Mercedes "more inconsistent than ever" in F1 Abu Dhabi qualifying

Lewis Hamilton said his Mercedes felt "more inconsistent than ever before" as he dropped out of Q2 in qualifying for Formula 1's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

In a tight Q2 session, Hamilton was demoted to 11th by Haas' Nico Hulkenberg and McLaren's Oscar Piastri, leading to Hamilton saying "there’s something not right with this car" on the radio. Meanwhile team-mate George Russell went on to qualify fourth in Q3.

Hamilton and Russell have been plagued all year by a capricious Mercedes W14 that is hard to trust.

Hamilton felt it was worse than ever on Saturday on the Yas Marina Circuit, which started with final practice in the daytime heat and a twilight qualifying session on a cooling track.
