Grammar pet peeves

I hate it when people put two spaces after a period. A single space after a period is the standard convention.

(I now have to go through this document and do a search-and-replace two spaces with one....grrrrrrrrrrrrr :( )

Two spaces grew out of the typewriter age, or when using monospaced fonts such as Courier New. Before computers, it was the standard practice so the eye could pick up on where the next sentence began.

Conventionally it isn't right or wrong to use 2 spaces or one now, I suppose it is all about how you learned to type and on what machine.

My advice.. get over it! ;)

And I read earlier that both single and double spaces after a period are acceptable. But check with your editor as s/he may have a preference. However if you read good books, you will see that single space is more standard.

(and I mean "books" here in the true sense of the word, not your supermarket Fabio-clad harlequin)

I learned to use two spaces. But, that's probably because my mom taught me on a typewriter when I was a kid. So, my typing skills have always been exemplary.

BTW, they still teach you to use two spaces at some typing classes in grade school. I think it's better with two spaces. One space always just lookst too unkempt.

Sorry, I learned to double space after a period from my high school typing teacher (who both had a moustache AND was a moped driving lesbian). Old habits die hard, I suppose.

I was Typist of the Week once. So there.

Interesting. I was a typesetter for 26 years - display advertising, fine books, yearbooks, vanity publishing. The standard is two spaces after a period. Some people want to change that, and perhaps they eventually will, but it looks better to me with 2 spaces.

Note: HTML code - old typesetter code we were using more than 20 years ago. Outdated stuff it is.
