True story: He was in a horrible car wreck between Star Wars and Empire, and he lost his hand, so they had to rewrite the script to explain why he had a prosthetic hand.
 
Like how they wrote Harrison Ford's death in that plane crash into the Force Awakens script (Ford was found alive a few days later but they were too lazy to change it again.)
