Help!

I finally got rid of satellite TV last month. I haven't really missed it because the satellite antenna cable thing was still attached to the TV and apparently I was still getting some sort of signal and the TV worked just fine even though limited to few channels - mostly shopping, pay per view, and a couple of movie channels - old movies.

Well, the signal was finally shut off - guess they figured I was serious and wasn't going to change my mind and want their service back.

When the signal was shut off, I installed an antenna. I had to reset my TV because it was stuck on channel 60 and nothing but static. Now all I get is 2 channels of static and HSN.

Granted I really don't watch TV - it is just the noise in my left ear as I play on the internet. But, HSN is not good. All they do is talk about clothes and jewelry. And some of that stuff is seriously gaudy stuff I don't know anyone would wear.

HELP!

Do I have to get a brand new 52" TV with internet connectivity so I can stream Netflix service movies, Hulu, and possibly play video games on it?

or,
is there some way to get my TV to recognize something other than the HSN channel?

If I start wearing that awful clothing and jewelry, will you please have me deprogrammed?

Do you have the new digital style tv or the old analog? I think you have to get a converter box to make the old-style tv's work without cable or dish.

I don't think a converter would even be worth it. At some point you've got to upgrade to vaguely modern technology. :S:

So I'd suggest getting a new HDTV; you can find them pretty cheap. I just got one with about a 40" screen and 1080p for a couple hundred dollars. If you've got a Wii (or either of the other major systems) you can stream Netflix, so you don't need a fancy TV with direct internet connectivity.

I don't think the TV is but 3 or 4 years old and when the converter test was done apparently mine still worked fine without the converter box. But, the thing has always been hooked up to satellite so I really don't know.

I don't have Wii but the kiddo would be happy if I got one. How does Wii stream Netflix? I don't have a phone line in the house - just cable internet.

Wiis connect to the net via wifi - is your internet wireless? They have a built in internet browser, and if you've got a Netflix subscription, they'll send you a free streaming disk.

We're not wireless now. We were at one time but there were issues so we went back to the cable. I've thought about trying to go wireless again. I'd like to take my laptop out on the front porch or go out back and not have to sling cable to do it.

Wireless technology has gotten a lot better over the past few years. If it's been a while since it didn't work for you, I definitely suggest giving it another try.

Yeah - we live close to a hospital. We'd be working just fine on the wireless then all of a sudden we'd get kicked off and an error message about encroaching on their secure network. The funny thing is the neighbor just one house further from the hospital doesn't have a problem at all.

I think it is because we're in an odd place too - in the middle of all kinds of super secure networks. The main police station is to the southeast, a cancer facility is to the north west of us, and the hospital is to the north east of us - putting us in sort of a bermuda triangle.

Okay ... I bought a new tv and a fancy antenna thingy. I felt like I've never bought a television before. It isn't as big as I'd like but I'm going to have to rearrange the living room and "install" the television before I can watch it. I've never had to "install" a television before. But, the stores don't sell anything but those flat panel televisions now. I'd leave it on the pedestal provided with it but it wouldn't take much for a cat to knock the thing over and then I'd be very, very upset with the pussy cat that did it.

Cool thing, I can use it as a computer monitor as well as a tv. Going to have some big fun with that!

I'm pulling for the cat.

you need to connect the Wii (or ps3 or xbox 360 whichever system you decide on) to the TV via "HDMI" cables. Quite specific, and I bet no one sold you one. They dont provide them generally when you buy the tv and they're essential for any kind of 1080 hookup, which all the games run and some of the streams too. nYou also have to do a litle programming for the tv to talk to the wii and the wii to talk to the computer. btw Dont get ripped off, Best buy will try to tell you you need to spend 80 bucks for the right cable and they all lie boldfaced about it. You can get the proper 6ft hdmi for between 5-20 dollars. Dont spend more. You also have to connect the wii to the computer via ethernet cables. (the out from the wii to the in at the computer. These are bigger and thicker than regular phone cables and have little lights on them that glow when they're hooked up. That's how you get the streaming service to your flat screen without a wireless setup.

What do you use for internet? Dial up?

The hospital will have a guest login for their wifi thats unsecured. If you get a usb wireless "dongle" (about 40 dollars) and plug it in to a usb port that will pick up the wireless guest signal from the hospital.
