High End PC for Photoshop & Illustrator

headvoid

Can I have Ops?
Here is my spec
Intel Xeon 5130 2.0Ghz, 1333mhz 4Mb Cache Processor
4GB DDR2 667 quad channel FBD Memory 4 x 1GB Max 32GB
Windows XP Pro SP2
3 x 300GB SCSI 10,000rpm hard disks RAID 5
600GB usable disk space
16x DVD+/-RW Drive
NVidia Quadro FX3500 Graphics Card 256MB
1394 Firewire
24” Widescreen Monitor Ultrasharp

Have I overspec'd the disk numbers and disk space? It will be used mainly for creating lo-res creative images - possibly some 3D rendering - but not a lot. Main use is image manipulation in photoshop and layout stuff with Illustrator

Should I reduce to two disks and put two processors in? My budget is good, but not endless.

I have made a bit of an executive decision to go High end PC rather than Mac as well - Do Mac people think I am the devil? Please gnash your teeth below if this is the case

First off I have to tell you that is not really a PC.

That is a Workstation. The Quadro is a high end Workstation solution for intensive graphics applications. The Xenon as well is designed for Workstations. That's a Woodcrest Dual-Core I believe.

That is total and utter overkill for Photoshop. You could move into ILM with that machine. I do some 3d work in Maya and a lot of video editing and I'm always in Photoshop and I experience great performace with all.

Do you REALLY need all that raw power?

Really depending on your end-user wishes getting a Workstation may not really be neccesary. You can go the high-end PC route instead. It really depends on specifically what you see yourself doing with this machine.

It's not for me of course, it's a workstation for a creative person.

Three disks are required - to get RAID 5 status - but I've reduced them to 146GB each. This also reduces the usable disk space. My main server was not designed for a creative team dumping loads of images onto it - it's only got 250GB - so the usable disk space is needed to store the work.

My bad on the Workstation - I knew it was that, but having not bought one before I kind of just called it a PC. I find myself rather wierdly in a fast growing small company having the best technical knowledge - if only they knew the extent of my knowledge.

I do need a lot of raw power - because it will be the only workstation in the company and it may be required to do video editing in the near future.

Thanks for the help - GB - expect some really cool O'rly memes coming up!

Aside from what Menty pointed out, you're better off with 2x300Gb in RAID 0. Likely as not you'll get better performance, but even if not, you won't waste money on a third 300Gb drive you won't get any use out of. And you really don't need 10,000rpm disks for PS when 7200rpm disks are cheaper and do the job more than fine. SRSLY.
