First, What Is a Narcissist? According to the ICD- 10, the diagnostic manual put out by the World Health Organization, a person must have at least five of the following symptoms in order to qualify as having Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD): (1.) A grandiose sense of self-importance. (2.) A sense of entitlement (3.) Requires excessive admiration. (4.) A lack of empathy. (5.) Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of them. (6.) Shows arrogance, haughty behaviors or attitudes. (7.) Is interpersonally exploitative. (8.) Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty or ideal love. (9.) Believes that they are “special” and unique. Therapy can help a person dealing with a narcissist to: Understand and identify narcissistic behavior. Identify the effects of the narcissist on their own thoughts and feelings. Set clear boundaries with the narcissist. Talk with others about the abuse. Rebuild self-esteem. NPD, like most mental health or personality disorders, isn’t black and white. Narcissism falls on a spectrum.
