I Am ONLINE!

Forever Empress E
And, later, I will tell you where I have been the last few days. Did you miss me? I missed you.

Monday night it was below freezing here with sleet and ice - something that rarely happens and causes lots of problems, like car wrecks, when it does. My internet connection died and the ISP declared my problem was widespread and was being worked on. Okay.

Tuesday, I was still unable to connect to the internet. After an hour or more dealing with the ISP's tech team, we were able to get my daughter's computer to connect to the internet if it was directly connected to the ISP's modem. We determined that the router had died. So, we went to the store and bought a 5-port work group switch because the guy at the store told us that was what we needed to replace our dead router. We could still get my daughter's computer connected to the internet but I kept getting a 169 IP address, unidentified network, etc. The ISP tech people told me that as my modem worked, the failure of my machine to connect to the internet was not their problem.

Wednesday, I replaced the cable from the switch to my pc but was still unable to connect. I spoke with the manufacturer of my PC and the manufacturer of my new switch and neither one were able to resolve my issue.

Thursday I was sick - lost 5 pounds - and had to be in bed all day. Actually, I've been doing pretty good the last month but I had a piece of pie and some chocolate at the office Christmas party Wednesday and that much sugar made me sick.

Friday I spoke to a little weirdo guy in India about my 169 IP issues. Apparently this is a big issue these days and has something to do with a patch Microsoft has issued that has caused more problems than resolved. Anyway, as I was getting the 169 IP error, it was assumed that my poor little PC had become another casualty. But, the little weirdo guy in India actually listened to what I said. My router had died, I went to the store and they sold me a work group switch to replace my router. We were unable to get both computers to work at the same time.

So, do you know what the problem was?

Indians have special elf powers. Maybe if you make the right sacrifice of candy, he'll let you in on his magical world of secrets.

That could be true.

The problem was a switch services only one computer. So, I took the switch back to the store and told the sales guy he sold me the wrong thing. He then tried to sell me an adaptor. I told him Merry Christmas and goodbye.

I went to another store in search of a wired router and the salesman there tried to sell me a wireless router even though I explained to him I cannot have a wireless router in my house because I live close to a hospital. When we had a wireless router, quite often the hospital's wireless internet would kick us offline and delcare we were trying to break into their service. So - we go wired. I told that salesman that the wireless thing really wouldn't serve my needs even though he swore up and down the Geek Squad said it would. Hmmm... last time I took something to Geek Squad they tried to charge me $200, had my machine for a week, and as they couldn't seem to get to repairing my machine, I picked it up, put a new power supply in it and was back working. Don't think I care to depend on anything the Geek Squad has to say about anything. So, I told him Merry Christmas and No Thank You too.

Last stop was Fry's. I love Fry's. I should have gone there to begin with. Some little fresh, freckled face young man with hair tinted a bright blonde/red fixed me right up with what I needed - a wired router - not a switch, not an adaptor, not a wireless unit! Yeah. God, I love a true nerdy geek. I said to him, Merry Christmas and God Bless You and on the way out told his boss he was the bestest thing on the planet.

Got home, plugged in the new router, and things worked just fine. And, just in time too. My niece living in Kentucky is going to have a baby just anytime now!
