In the absence of skinofevil...

The Question

Eternal
...we might ask: Is a troll more person or persona? And if TK flourished under the skin persona in the past, is it not the duty of each one of us to revive at least some part of what once made TK so great? Or am I doing this just to piss off the old-timers?
:sarek:

Person or persona?

A really believable, long term troll needs both. The most believable personaes have some of the puppet master in them.

Short term trolls it doesn't matter as much. It really depends on style and goals.

Trolling is ten percent trolling and ninety percent reputation.
When it comes to TK? Hell yes, because it's gotten so bloated with twats who think 'fuck you fag' is trolling that TKers have to spend more time debating over whether or not 'fuck you back!' is evidence of said trolling mediocrity.

A variation on GTC's statement -- trolling is 10% action and 90% reaction. The greatness of the troll (as in the action, not the actor) is best judged by how out of proportion the reaction is.

The "fag" and "ghey" thing has to be the most overused and unoriginal "troll" there is at this point. :(

You must be a fucking fag then.

ha aha ah aha aahahaha ahahahaha aha ahah aha comicon retards anyone?

I believe the term "Ironic Persona" sums up the spirit of trolling best. The best trolls, like Skin and others, are the alter-egos of some normal, nominally sane person. They do it for the sake of driving other people nuts or for reaction. Examples: Jillian, Skin, Wordin, Jack, Me.

This distinguishes what I'd call "crusaders", people who troll because they have a specific beef with a board or admin. Examples: Che, Miss Manners, Cait, CU.

Then there are people who just like this board, not fish or foul, but who like socializing here. Examples: Aurian, BDM, Dark Link, TQ, Eggs, Gagh, LG. Some of these can be troll-like, but I think they are here for the cookies.

Ironclad, you should group me in the first group. Trolling is my way of staying sane and blowing off steam.

IRL, I help poor children and protect little old ladies.

TQ doesn't normally post his personal trolling campaigns on the board. So I can see where he'd be put into the social freeloading group, a group I'm unfortunately falling under since I haven't done much in the way of trolling lately.

An air of legitimacy is helpful. As well as developing a suitable persona and providing you have some nous about it, it also depends where you troll. For example, TrekBBS has been exhausted. The glory days of trolling have long since expired and members (myself included) are far too adept at spotting an obvious shit-stirrer.

Ironclad doesn't know TQ at all!!

Hence the assumption of skin's vacated throne. ;) I would've nominated Storm for it, otherwise, but he also seems to have vanished into the thinnest kind of air. :(

There's two of the best reasons for that gibbering and drooling all over themselves down in DayCare. Operational security, you understand. Suffice it to say, those, things are afoot, out of reach of the Kiddie Table. :)
