Is Joe Satriani a douche???

Volpone

Zombie Hunter
...or did Coldplay steal his song?

For me Satriani falls into sort of the same category as Stevie Ray Vaughn. Sure, he's a talented guitarist, I'll give you that. But so what? Every song he's ever made sounds exactly the same--like the soundtrack to a really high-quality 1980s porno movie.

Listening to the 2004 Satriani song (Jesus, it's like fucking seven minutes of him noodling around on the guitar with a drum machine in the background) I gotta say there's a riff in it that is eerily similar to the...refrain?--one of the bits in the Coldplay song. But geez, my Mom noticed a resemblance between the theme from "Born Free" (Some 1960s movie about baby lions) and "Star Wars". I think it's just a coincidence.

Shoot, I think that Ricky Ricardo guy from the late '90s has a better shot at suing them for plagiarizing the name "Livin' La Vida Loca".

Link didn't come up.

Seriously though. I'm of the "even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then" thought about Satriani's use of the riff. I mean here he's come up with a nice, lyrical little passage--and he promptly buries it in his crappy virtuoso noodling. By comparison the whole structure of the Coldplay song is built around the riff.

I'm not sure if he's annoyed that someone else knew how to structure a song or he's just amazed that someone was able to take something that sounds a lot like something he's done and actually make something people want to listen to. :ramen:

Wow. That's about as boring as watching Canadian public television. Worse still, Canadian public access at 4am.

Yeah, you can watch some unemployed Canadian guitar player show everyone on YouTube how smart he is (wait till his wife at work finds out he's fucking off at home again).

But when you listen to the two songs one sucks and one doesn't. For me it is akin to when Apple tried to sue Microsoft over Windows, claiming they'd ripped off the Mac OS.

Everything was stolen from the Blues from the 20's - 50's.

It's all a copy, of a copy, of a copy, of a copy.

Go listen to these three bands' catalogs respectively.

Elvis Presley
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin

Everything is a copy of what they've done.

Black Sabbath only changed a bit of what the Beatles and Zeppelin did to make theirs darker and we ended up with heavy metal.

If you want the original artists, go listen to Howlin' Wolf, Lightning Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, etc.

 Good point. Did Chuck Berry ever successfully sue the Beach Boys for using the intro for "Johnny B. Goode" as "Fun, Fun, Fun" [now that Daddy took the T-bird away]?

Words of wisdom, Lloyd. Words. Of. Wisdom.
