New York Riptide 2024 Preview: An Overhauled Right Side Looks to Bring Balance to the O

IL Indoor counts down the remaining days until the 2024 National Lacrosse League season starts with a preview per day of each team. Previews appear in order from last to first in the 2023 standings, with a look back at how each team performed last year, key changes to personnel, and three questions that will play large roles in how they perform this season.

New York Riptide
Last season: 5-13, 7th in East, missed playoffs.

Goals for: 201 (6th East, 10th overall). Goals against: 243 (8th East, 15th overall).

Top three scorers: Jeff Teat (56/80/136), Connor Kearnan (30/45/75), Reilly O'Connor (20/45/65),

Top three in caused turnovers: Scott Dominey (20), Ron John (20), Kevin Brownell (15), Damon Edwards (15).

Key departures: F Tyler Digby, Mike Burke, Brett Hickey; D/T Scott Dominey, Chad Cummings, Jordi Jones-Smith; G Steven Orleman

Key arrivals: F Kiel Matisz, Austin Madronic, Colton Lidstone, Matt Anderson; D/T Zack Deaken, John Lafontaine, Mitch Wilde, Matthew Bennett

The defense is older; is it better?

The Riptide are only three seasons into their existence, but their roster for this season looks like it could include six defenders who are 30 or older, including three who are at least 35. A trio of that veteran core are new additions. John Lafontaine (33) and Mitch Wilde (32) were brought in during the offseason while Matthew Bennett (30) was signed when Rochester released him during training camp. While they are no longer spring chickens in the professional sports sense, Lafontaine and Wilde both continue to look effective as they get further into their careers. They bring steadiness and athleticism to the New York lineup and should help the defense take strides to be better. The other key addition on the back end is a young player, 2022 first round pick Zack Deaken. He was a value pick at No. 8 and should bring instant impact at the pro level. New York also has returnees like Ron John, Matt Marinier and Brent Noseworthy ready to step into even bigger roles.

So yes, it would appear that the Riptide defense did manage to get older and better at the same time.

Class of 2023 Recruiting: Designating 77 Additional Four-Star Recruits

In releasing the Class of 2023 Power 100 last week, Inside Lacrosse identified 21 payers as Five Stars and an additional 79 players as Four-Star recruits.

Today, we're pleased to announce the 77 additional players in the Class of 2023 that have been designated as Four Stars. With 985 Division I commitments in the IL Recruiting Database for the Class of 2023, almost exactly 18% of the class has been denoted as a four- or five-star. Relative to a five-star, a four-star recruit is projected to be capable of similar heights as the most sought-after players in the class, but lacking either the consistency in performance or one attribute that provides the level of certainty that comes in projecting a five star.
