Liam Payne, one of the five members of the “The X Factor”-bred boy band One Direction, has died at the age of 31. The singer died after falling three floors from a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to the Associated Press. Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, said in a statement that Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room.”
Payne was best known in One Direction for his recognizable falsettos that became an integral part of the band’s chart-topping bubblegum pop hits — “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Best Song Ever,” “Story of My Life,” “Night Changes,” among numerous others. As one of the highest-selling boy bands in modern history, the quintet sold over 70 million records worldwide during their time together between 2010 and 2016.

A source in the prosecutor’s office with knowledge of the investigation, who requested to remain confidential because of the sensitivity of his position, tells PEOPLE that prosecutors believe the drugs were procured for Payne by a hotel employee before the former One Direction member fell multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and died at age 31 on Oct 16. "There appears to be evidence that a hotel employee sourced the drugs for Payne," the source says. "An indictment for drugs distribution could follow shortly."
Multiple other sources previously told PEOPLE that Payne was asked to leave another hotel, the Palacio Duhau - Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, after appearing intoxicated and bothering other guests. The hotel had no comment on the matter. Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, previously told PEOPLE the musician "jumped from the balcony" of his hotel room. A preliminary autopsy report revealed Payne died from multiple injuries and "internal and external" hemorrhages after the fall.

Sources confirmed to ABC News that a partial autopsy revealed the One Direction alum "had multiple substances in his system" when he fell from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to ABC's reporting, one of the substances found in Payne's body was "pink cocaine," a recreational drug that generally includes a combination of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA — and not necessarily cocaine — per the National Capital Poison Center. The sources also told ABC News that "an improvised aluminum pipe" used to ingest drugs was found in Payne's hotel room.
