I started welling up a bit at the end when he spoke to the cousin, which is very unusual for me as I’m a fairly emotionally stunted Brit. I don’t think it was so much because of the guy who died (because people always claim their relatives were angels and we don’t know what to make of that), but it was heartwarming to see Louis sit and listen and take the words out of the horses mouth with someone who wouldn’t normally get a voice.
I found all the stuff about reenactments to be a lot of filler. You only really got any insight from it when the former Scientologist who was consulting Louis would flip out occasionally because the script was inaccurate in some way. Also there was a lot of talk about abuse which I never felt was properly defined. It’s probably Louis’ least successful documentary in my view. I understand he was never going to be able to interview any current members or get a guided tour, but I feel he could’ve gleaned more from ex members.
