Milwaukee bra ban lifted, no longer deemed a fire hazard as they hang from the rafters in a bar.
The Milwaukee bra ban has been lifted, which means these articles of underwear can hang from the rafters once again at a local bar. Bras were banned in Milwaukee, but this didn't mean the town was full of women bouncing along the sidewalk, the bra ban only pertained to a bar. This unique drinking establishment is a place where bras dangle off the ceiling as a tradition that has gone on for about a half of a century, according to the Inquistr on May 18, 2013.
The Holler House, an establishment that's been in operation for about 100 years, began a tradition about 45 years ago, where women started filling up the ceiling with bras. Marcy Skowronski, the owner of the bar, explains this strange phenomenon at at the Holler House.
Skowronski said that when women have had a little too much to drink, the bras come off and the women fling them onto the ceiling and they hang off the rafters. The Holler House's claim to fame are these bras dangling from the ceiling of every size, shape and color. There are bras with or without underwires, front closing bras, bras that latch in back, some very sexy and some just generic bras, all that signify a woman's happy-go-lucky night out.
When the Holler House recently had a city inspector come in and tell Skowronski that the bras had to come down as they pose a fire hazard, she didn't understand what the problem could be. The bras have hung from the ceiling for 45 years and the bar's gone through 45 yearly inspections without the garments being deemed a fire hazard before.
Skowronski said she doesn't understand why the inspector did this, saying that maybe the inspector was having a bad day or maybe the inspector just doesn't like her. Skowronski wasn't going to take the bra ban lying down, she contacted the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel hoping a little bit of publicity would work on changing this bra ban.
She was right, the Milwaukee City Council had a meeting and the bra ban was lifted. The bras can continue to hang from the rafters, like they have for the past half of a century. The only problem is, Skowronski took the bras down off the rafters when she was first told she had to. This gives Holler House the oppurtunity to hold a “bra hanging party,” which will happen sometime in the near future.
