missmanners' garden diary (large images)

missmanners

grrrrrrrr...
My weekend projects, besides mowing and weeding include starting on this mess...

Thats the back of my oversized shed/small barn and that pretty vine is poison ivy Not only is it all over the building but it's sprouting up from the ground like grass. I'm over sensitive to it, so can't pull it out, I need to kill it. Does anyone have any agent orange?

;)

My other major project is the veggie garden spot.

I have no idea what those huge weeds are, but they kind of look like tobacco plants. I dont think I'll smoke them. More agent orange please.

;)

Well I wasn't able to track down any agent orange, but I did get some stuff from the local garden supply store guaranteed to kill the nasty things. Just as I started to spray the ivy, out hops Buggsy Jr and 2 of his siblings.

I took several photos, but they blend in so well the auto focus on my camera couldnt find them and this is the only photo of the bunch that you can actually spot Buggsy Jr without hunting for him. My whole yard is like Watership Down now, I counted a grand total of 6 adults and 7 babies at 6 am today. No I am not going to cook them.

Then when I tried to spray those big leafed weeds in the gardem out hopped this little guy.

I named him Bubba and spent the whole afternoon shooing him away so I could mow. He figured out mowing stirred up insects he could eat, but he wanted to hop right in front of the mower. NO!! I did not want to see shredded tweet!

I noticed about 1/4 of the back yard (an acre or so) seems to be these wild strawberries.

I've decided to just let them go and see what happens. I'm hoping they will eventually choke out the grass so I never have to mow again! Today I noticed a couple of tiny red berries about the size of a pea.

I got a level spot for the birdbath (and this morning it's leaning a bit because a gopher or something has dug a tunnel there).

I'm hoping to have enough time to limb that big maple tomorrow or monday. I just know ticks are dropping off into my hair every time I have to walk under them (some are only 3 feet off the ground)

*itch itch*

What a beautiful yard you have. I love the picture of the wild strawberry plants and the bird feeder. Have you ever considered getting a goat? :D

Man, judging from the size of that yard, you're gonna need a Crop Duster to spray everything in those photos

nice yard though ;)

Try mowing it with a 28" non-self-propelled mower.

By the way, that large maple and the old sugar maple on the other side of the yard produced about 40-45 39 gal bags of leaves last fall.

The poison ivy is looking wilted, I've chopped down all of those weeds in the garden spot because even after being sprayed with roundup, they were thriving. I dont know what they are, but they have a very strong odor, almost medicinal. I had to chase a half dozen toads out of the way of my hoe and Buggsy Jr was hiding there again. I put down some landscape fabric and black plastic to try to keep the weeds under control. If it doesnt storm, I'll plant back there tonight.
