What a pleasant surprise this movie was for me, I liked it. That makes two superhero comic movies that I've seen this year, and liked. I count that as very lucky. While X-Men was more of a personal experience for me, there is no doubt that this movie really is Superman. He's back.

The opening credits will be fine nostalgia for anyone old enough to have seen the first two Superman movies in the theater like I have. The original John Williams score is there, majestic and awe-inspiring. And the credits themselves blur into blue waves, just like in Christopher Reeve's movies. You can tell this movie was a labor of love, and that's not just the $300 million dollar budget, either. (Yes, you read that right.)

There are many fine touches in the movie that make it worth it to see at the theater, I dare not give them away. I will note some things I liked:

* Perry White remarks that he needs "Iconic" pictures of Superman, and that is the overall look of the movie. Sure, someone like the Hulk can fling around tanks, but this is Superman. His acts of heroism in this movie are quite impressive. (Did I mention he's Superman?)

* Superman should really put a Brinks Security sign outside his Fortress of Solitude.

* How weird to see a movie work so hard to achieve continuity with Superman I & II, movies almost 30 years old! Yet it works, because it is made with love.

* Really nice touch: Yes, that is Marlon Brando's voice throughout as Superman dwells on advice from Jor-El. Dead for years, he lives on as Superman's father even today.

* In a crowd scene near the end of the movie, the original Lois Lane from the 50s television series is featured in the crowd. Nice touch.

* This Superman seems to have more in common with Forrest Gump than the Man of Steel we're used to. He says very little, and what he does says sounds very Gumpish. But you know what, saying he is Gump with a Cape is not an insult. It fits the movie, and fits the actor.

Bottom line: I went to this movie expecting to be disappointed from the things I had read "professional" critics say. Ignore the naysayers. If you want to see Superman soaring high above the Earth, listening for cries for help, you won't be disappointed.

Don't see this at home. Any other superhero can fit on your tv. Superman soars with the big movie screen!

I think they are learning some things about making good Super Hero movies.

First, the alter ego has to be *solid*. X-Men, the last Batman, Spiderman and now Superman all succeed because the heroes out of costume make you care about the characters.

Second, the villian must be believable and not crazy over the top. Spiderman flirted the edge with this, but Batman and X-Men nailed, and Spacey was one of the best parts of Superman Returns.

I agree, good film. Not as good as the last Batman or X2, but that's a tall order to live up to.

I really look forward to Wonderwoman, now.
