Movies every person should see

Pick 5.

Mine are movies that other's have widely copied, to the point of cliché.

1) Casablanca -THE tragic/tough guy love story. Also fantastic just on it's own (an example of sharp writing). I will boycott any remake, and hunt down the director of said remake.
2) The Seven Samurai - Most action movies and westerns tip their hats to this story. Pace is slow to most modern audiences, but still worth a watch.
3) Gone With the Wind - Just because of so many cultural References.
4) Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope): molded Science Fiction moves for the last 30 years.
5) The Haunting (Original version, not the remake): How to do a SUSPENSE movie (not a monster movie). Minimal special effects (although the "Breathing Door" is truly simple...and creepy), good cast, and tension that builds and builds...

My next 5 would be easy to list off too...but I"ll make this harder (or easier) and only list these.

1. Baraka
2. Hero
3. ...

I can never think of movies as good untill I'm seeing them.

Situational memory.

Why!? Overacting abound, totally unnecessary moments that equal a third of the film, and lastly, really bad dialogue. Seriously, a third of that movie could've been left on the cutting room floor.

my top 5.

1. Citizen Kane. Tarantino wasn't the first to do a non-linear plot. Cinematically it's perfect.
2. A Clockwork Orange or Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. It's a tossup. They're both incredible pieces of cinema, both for their political satyre, great acting, and of course Kubrick's direction is astounding.
3. Il Postino (The Postman) - The whole movie is an Italian poem. Which is almost redundant because the Italian language sounds poetic on its own.
4. Cidade de Deus (City of God) - This Brazillian film is amazing if for nothing but its cinematography. What a well-shot film.
5. The French Connection - It is the Alpha and the Omega of action films. It set the standard for chase scenes for years to come. It even outdoes Bullitt, in my opinion.

1. American History X
2. Serenity
3. Girl/Interuppted
4. Interview with The Vampire
5. The Fifth Element

I'll try to do different ones than already mentioned, just for examples of different genres:

1. Jaws (best suspense/horror example of the 70's era, and has been parodied forever) runner up: Silence of the Lambs for gut-wrenching suspense.
2. The Outlaw Josey Wales: Epic western classic. Runner up The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
3. The Graduate: Best romance/ against-the-odds film and and the REAL origin of MILF. Runner up: An Officer and a Gentleman because there's sex and Richard Gere gets kicked in the nuts. Plus he gets the girl. Yay.
4. Alien: Sci-fi horror and Sigourney in panties. Plus the obvious one was taken. Runner up: Star Trek II What the franchise should have been, and where it should have stopped.
5. Monty Python's Holy Grail This is what Comedy really ought to be. Tied with Blazing Saddles, but I already have westerns in play.

Okay, I snuck ten into a list of five. Sue me with a fake internet lawyer.

1. The Princess Bride. No-brainer ;)
2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Another no-brainer

The rest are muddled together, but I'll go with

3. Star Wars IV (or V if you like). Copycat of SB's post really ;)
4. Classic comedy movie, as in one of the old good ones. I don't know the genre all that well, but I'd go with an Abbot & Costello flick--Hold That Ghost if I have to be specific. Something by the Marx Brothers ^^ would do as well.

Ummm . . .

5. A good western, maybe. Just because.

1. West Side Story
2. The Notebook
3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
4. When a Stranger Calls
5. The Shawshank Redemption

Girl Interrupted Angelina Jolie good fuck hope like Frenchman. Look last name est francais. Serenity not see. American History X no one Quebecois care about. USA not important to Quebec nationalism. All Quebecois want watch movie is called Fuck America Suck Quebecois Ball Dry.

Oui vrai. Jaws good movie very suspense. Make Paladin stay away Lac Saint-Jean afraid shark bite off big French cock. Not good idea so Paladin swim only private or public swim pool. Alien ok but take too long before any action. Become tedious want to fall sleep nighty night. Never watch Monty Pything. No idea what is. No saw The Graduate or Outlaw Josey Wales have no idea what is.

West Side Story est tres bien! Excellente! Rocky Horror Picture Show movie stupide for les enfants only. Paladin watch remake When a Stranger Calls. Paladin want so badly fuck Camilla Belle! Look name est francaise! La proof French women superior. Camilla is beautiful French girl with body make man cry. Shawshank Redemption stupide movie boring make Paladin cry want go home.

1)Jezebel
2)Infinity
3)The Hudsucker Proxy
4)Flight of Dragons
5)...
I know I saw a movie that I want to put on this list as the ultimate must-see, but for the life of me I can't think of it right now.

I love The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Those Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns are fabulous.

Sometimes a classic is judged on how many lines you can and would quote. GB&U is perfect for that, and it has the unique trait of not underselling any of the leads. None of the three is the weaker party as far as "badass" goes.

I agree with all of your points. It's not a GREAT movie. But it's an important one due to all of the clichés and other echoes.

And omitting Citizen Cain on my part is horrible...I should have swapped out "The Haunting" for it (but keeping The Haunting in my top 10).

# of lines- that would be Ghostbusters then.
