Music - I like it

Had to go buy some new music last night. Picked up Josh Groban's newest - "Awake" - haven't heard all of it yet but I liked his first two CDs. My favorite of his is still "Mi Mancherai" because of the awesome violin. Also picked up James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" and Clay Aiken's "A Thousand Different Ways." Aiken has a nice voice and lots of potential. If he wants to sing standards and old favorites, fine, but picking up the tempo isn't the same thing as a style. I will eventually forgive him for messing up "Right Here Waiting" if I like the rest of this CD. I probably will like it - it was on sale, all the tunes are old favorites, and he does have a very nice voice. Maybe I'll write him a letter and tell him how I want him to sing the songs I like. Would that be pushy? Is he very popular? I mean, if he changes his performance to suit me and nobody else likes it, would I have to be his soul source of income? It is too early in the morning for this. See you later in the day after I've had some sleep, several cups of coffee, and a haircut.

I just picked up the new John McLaughlin "Industrial Zen" He's got Dennis Chambers backing him on drums in this set, and he still thrills me with his intricacies of composition. I'm glad some things don't change with age.

I also picked up the "new" Pearl Jam which, despite it's hype is just more recycled stuff. I guess you can only be angry and edgy for so long, or something.

Rachel Bissex, who was a local Vermont singer/songwriter (folksie) went nuts when she was diagnosed terminal with breast cancer, and put out one of the GREAT albums in her genre before she passed on "In White Light" it's called. A total triumph of the will.

On another note, I finally listened to "The Wind" that session Warren Zevon did before he died, where he collected all his pro budz for one last round.

Who knew that fucker would go out with a whimper instead of a bang? Exciteable boy, indeed.

Two of my favorites:

James Taylor and Yo-Yo Mah CD "Appalachian Journey." Made me remember how much I like James Taylor.

Hillary Hahn playing Barber & Meyer violin concertos - some very powerful and moving music.

I remember when Yo-yo Mah was a guest performer at the Johnson State College Composers Conference in '75. Aaron Copland was musical director, Gary Burton was there, and a whole shitload of professional musicians showed up over the course of the two weeks.

I was working on my BA in tech theatre and the lighting director, so we had ACCESS to the performers. The Vermont State Symphony was the "house band" and there was just some great stuff, with Mr Mah's work I just remember leaving me so expanded it altered me musically.

Anyway, yes to yo yo

I heard this music on my jazz station and picked up this CD recently...

Michel Camilo ~ One More Once

He is known as a great jazz, latin and classical pianist with superb technical ability. I can only speak for this CD....Its truley wonderful....

I aslo picked up

Keith Urban ~ Love, Pain And The Whole Crazy Thing
He plays marvelous guitar riffs and lets loose with some great banjo pickin' ....His lyrics of course leaves you wanting more.....And if the ladies decide they don't like the CD ....they can always drool on the CD case ....

I already had in my collection
Keith Urban ~ Be Here
It is fabulous!

Urban's like Duncan Sheik, although Sheik's a little older these days. I used to think Edie Brickell has some sort of talent besides her ability to carry Paul Simon around inside of her, so go figure.

Listened to the classic southern rock station while out driving around today. Dang, that stuff still sounds good - Lynard Skynard's "Gimme Back My Bullets," Wet Willie's "Keep On Smiling," Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard it in a Love Song," and, of course, the Charlie Daniels Band's "The South's Gonna Do it Again" and "Devil Went Down to Georgia." It needs to be spring, soon.

Definitely.

Finally had the chance to listen to all of Josh Groban's new "Awake" CD. While it doesn't have an awesome number on it, like "Mi Mancherai," "Remember Me" or "Oceano", and he appears to be trying out a stylistic change in the arrangements and singing more in English, I like this CD. Some people have complained that he is losing his voice. I don't agree. I think he is trying to broaden that neo-classical cubby hole he has been placed into without going into pop and he is doing it. That young man has an amazing voice and I eagerly anticipate many, many years of listening to him.

What is your point?

That there used to be more posters on this board and we had decent conversations instead of this nearly monosyllabic hate rubbish you and Gear spout?
