The Legendary Troll King
Legendary race car driver Parnelli Jones asked high-performance vehicle manufacturer Steve Saleen to build him a modern Mustang with the look of the 1970 Boss 302 that he drove to win the Trans Am Championship in 1970.
Not only did Steve Saleen think it was a good idea, he thought it was such a great idea that he decided to build 500 of them! Now 499 Mustang lovers, in addition to Parnelli himself, will have the chance to buy a Saleen / Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang.
Beginning with the Grabber Orange paint and the black striped "shaker" hood, the new Saleen / Parnelli Jones Limited Edition is obviously inspired by Parnelli's original 1970 Boss 302 Mustang. Other period-correct details include race-style hood pins, black trunk deck, and 302 side stripes. Completing the overall effect, the new Limited Edition comes with Saleen performance styling including front fascia with racing-style air dam, side skirts, rear fascia, rear 1970 replica wing, trunk insert license plate panel with chrome trim, rear window quarter panels, and a racing-style billet gas cap. Rear window louvered sport slats are restyled to reflect the similar option from the 1970s.
For those who are total Parnelli Jones fans, the new Limited Edition even includes Parnelli's racing number 15 on removable and reusable static cling race decals, and the Ford blue oval, just like they appeared on Parnelli's 1970 Boss 302 Mustang.
Signature decals of both Steve Saleen and Parnelli Jones are included on the roof above the doors, and an all-new Saleen Parnelli Jones logo appears throughout the exterior and interior.
"We designed this commemorative vehicle to capture the raw, aggressive feel that Parnelli raced with, and created a racing revolution," explained Steve Saleen, president and CEO of Saleen and a former racer who has been building high-performance vehicles for more than 20 years.
The Saleen / Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang is powered by a new Saleen 3-valve V8 engine that is developed from Ford's modular V8, with the displacement increased to 302 cubic inches—the same displacement as Parnelli's Boss 302 race car in 1970. The new Saleen high-compression engine produces 370 SAE horsepower at 6000 RPM and 370 lb-ft of torque at 4000 RPM and is equipped with Saleen's PowerFlash technology to get the most out of the high-revving valve train, forged pistons, rods, crankshaft and lightweight aluminum flywheel.
The engine package for the Parnelli Jones Limited Edition has new Saleen 302 valve covers and a new exhaust system that provides a low-resonating sound that is a hallmark of Saleen.
Suspension on the Saleen / Parnelli Jones Limited Editon is pure Saleen technology and includes an all-new Watts-Link suspension, derived from racing and performance applications; even though it is current technology, it is still similar to the suspension in Parnelli's original 1970 race car.
The wheels are another Limited Edition tribute to the original, styled after the Minilite wheels used to race in 1970, but in a modern 19-inch size that are 9 inches wide in the front and 10 inches wide at the rear, and fitted with high-performance Pirelli 275x40x19 up front and 285x40x19 rear tires. The wheels display the Saleen / Parnelli Jones Limited Edition logo on the center cap. For braking performance on par with the suspension and tires, the Limited Edition is fitted with 14-cih Saleen brakes.
"Parnelli Jones is an American racing icon," said Saleen. "In the fifties, sixties and seventies Parnelli won just about every race that he appeared in, including the Indy 500. 1970 was the year that the SCCA Trans Am Series boasted the most competitive field ever, and Parnelli Jones and his Boss 302 Mustang competed against the likes of Mark Donahue and Dan Gurney, and there he captured the championship. Our relationship began in 1987 when Parnelli raced for me on the Saleen team, and helped us win our first SCCA Manufacturer's Championship at Sebring, Florida. I can't think of any other individual who brings with him the unique connection between championship winning Mustangs and Saleen."
Parnelli Jones commented, "It's a true honor to have a special edition Saleen wearing my name. This impressive car takes me back in time—it makes me want to take it for a run around the track. I'm sure that this car will be an adrenaline-pumping experience for anyone who has the chance to own or drive one. I think that this car is going to evoke nostalgia not only for Steve Saleen and myself, but for everyone who lays their eyes on it."
