My laptop is now...

...fubar. It froze while browsing a certain website. I turned it off, restarted it, but it won't boot up. I switched in a known good hard drive but it still won't start up. It keeps shutting off on the POST message. What could be the problem?

I am nothing without my laptop. :y_cry:

Well, what options, if any, do you have access to? if you have access to the BIOS in any fashion, see if it offers you the option of resetting to factory defaults. It would help to know a little more about the hardware specs, as well.

It's a 3yr old Dell Inspiron 8200 2.4GHz. I can't get into the BIOS because it's not responding to keyboard presses...external PS2 keyboard doesn't work either. My 3yr warranty was up last month. I am majorly screwed!!!

Huh. I dunno what to advise you, then. I had a Compaq Presario do the same thing a few years ago -- the only solution I could come up with was to sell it on eBay.

Kidding.

But yeah, if you can't even get it to detect input devices and let you into the BIOS, it's a doorstop.

I know.

I have a friend who's in IT. I'm gonna have him have a look at it. In the meantime I'm making plans to get a replacement laptop.

I know this is going to sound stupid but, what have you got connected to the Laptop? A lot of times problems come from an external device like an External HD. Try removing all external devices and trying to start it up.

Are you able to get into the boot menu? I dont know what it would be on an Inspiron notebook... Might be f12

I ordered another one. Hope it gets here quick. In the meantime, I've dusted off my very old dell 5000e P3 500mhz. :(

Sorry to hear it was that bad man.

Yeah, the only other thing I would think of is what MM Said. It will set everything back to default.

Something probably didn't reset properly after you did the hard reboot. Maybe a major fuck up in your BIOS.

They're spendy depending on how you customize 'em, but I've had a Dell XPS desktop for almost a year now and none of the components have shit at me yet. In fact, when I get the cash together, I've got my eye on an Inspiron 710M.

I ordered the Latitude d820, I think. I couldn't justify the extra $1000 for an XPS for what I do with a laptop. I am not a gamer any more anyway.

unplug it, and remove the battery. Put the battery back in, then hold the on button down for 60-120 seconds.
Unless I'm traveling, I rarely keep the battery in my laptop.

My new laptop shipped today. Estimated delivery is tomorrow. I am so happy.
